Trump's response to the Covid-19

He won't resign.  But I believe that he will not run again.

With all due respect, I think you guys are nuts. He will look for a way to personally profit from this, and that includes staying in the White House for as long as possible.

My money is on what basil said, unfortunately (except for the "nuts" part, for which i would substitute maybe "mistaken").

That’s a fair response.  I am questioning my own sanity these days, and the sanity of the world at large.

To clarify, I’m not saying I think he would resign or not run again.  But I wouldn’t be shocked if either of those things happened.  If he decided he’s milked the system for all he can, and it’s a good time to cut and run, he would cut and run.

And he wouldn’t care what chaos he left in his wake with the Republican Party either. They are a means to an end for him.

Trump doesn't resign.

He runs businesses into the ground and engineers an escape to leave others holding the bag, but he doesn't resign.

Well, I’d consider the first step is pretty close to accomplished.

Suddenly dropping out of the race, maybe claiming that hateful Democrats have made him such a target of fake accusations that he can’t in good conscience continue to run, for the good of the Republican Party and America?  Could be step two.

Another possible step two would be to not campaign very hard and try not to get reelected. Then make a bunch of speeches about how he was robbed of reelection by Ukrainian meddling on behalf of Democrats, ordering his Attorney General to investigate (for the remaining weeks of his term in office) and generally kicking up a lot of dust on his way out. Maybe pardoning a bunch of criminals on as well.

Again, I don’t think it’s likely but if it happened I wouldn’t be shocked. That’s just where we are in Trump’s America right now.

I have been trying to stay away from the politics threads recently but the following thought just occurred to me.  I hope to hell that Justice Ginsburg is self quarantining in some hermetically sealed wing of the International Space Station.

Can you imagine the ####show if she (or any of the liberal justices) were to die right now?

While I am here, I also have to say that while I normally can't stand Andrew Cuomo, I think he has been doing a hell of a job filling the leadership void on this issue, particularly as things have been ramping up.

A benevolent authoritarian technocrat sounds pretty good right now.

Instead we have malevolent authoritarian opportunist.

 We miss you. Come back.

 Bloomberg vs Trump. Who's worse?

It's a moot point now, but at the time of the thread I thought it was a very easy question to answer, and even moreso now in light of current circumstances. Not directed at you, just that your post set up what I thought was a relevant answer to that thread. And not really much point beyond that (an example, I guess, of being stuck wfh and so posting with less discipline than normal).

 Gotcha.

I'm not actually advocating for an autocracy right now. But this President is the last one I would want granted any kind of emergency powers. I would actually feel better with Pence.

I would feel 1000 times better if Trump and Pence would go away and Nancy Pelosi be sworn in as President.

 Agreed.

Actually it's something I've thought dozens of times since January 20, 2017.

I just tuned in to his conference for about 30 seconds. All I needed to hear him say was that outbreak was a total surprise. That we heard about some cases in China and suddenly it was here.

I also dip my toe ever-so-slightly into the world of Twitter. It seems that the new conservative take on this is that it's the Democrats fault because they were busy impeaching Trump while the outbreak was happening.

Edited to correct a speech to text error.

At the latest press briefing, Trump was asked "How was the test?"

His response was so vague, I doubt he actually was swabbed so they could do a Covid-19 test on him.

It's a beautiful day today. Take it easy. Just relax.

 Was that something he said?

is anybody here still trying to tell us Trump's press conferences are "excellent"?

"no one could have foreseen" is the lying Republican response when something that was actually foreseeable blows up in our faces.  We should start a list of the "no one could have foreseen" stuff that was eminently predictable:

  • 9/11
  • That Iraq did not have WMD
  • That the Iraq war would be a debacle
  • that New Orleans levees could be breached
  • a pandemic

Aha, there you have it! Don’t watch, don’t listen, just opine!

He listened, he heard correctly, and commented on that one part.

And because our president is a jerk, he calls it the "Chinese Virus".

He also gave himself a 10/10 for the handling of the crisis.... unbelievable
