Pet Peeves

Ok, so Flex Tape.  Says it's good for hoses.  Well, that's probably if the hose is on and flowing.  If you're using a hose nozzle and you turn if off.  The flex tape patch (where I had a small hole) will fill up like a water balloon until it bursts.

But hey - at least it can stop a wrecking ball.

hmm, maybe wrapping it a few times would work.

flex tape is not good for patches. You’re better off cutting the hose and joining it with the plastic nipples.

Jamie can actually pick up the plastic nipples at Home Depot…. But not this aisle, it’s in gardening. smile

Is it bad that our Home Depot is so big

How big is it?

It's so big I need a Segway just to make it to Aisle 15, baby! Don't forget to tip your wait staff who make less than Home Depot employees, but care about you more*.

*some HD staff actually give a ****

Apparently it’s the biggest Home Depot in the world.

Ever notice the bigly sign on the building that says “Super Store”?

If I’m a bit confused (as our librarian believes) , I think the first Home Depot in New Jersey was on rte 10 in East Hanover. IIRC they had sent me a flier in the mail giving me a 10% discount for the grand opening…circa 1988? But like I said…. I’m just discombobulated or confused about things around here…

In the universe!!!

This claim can’t be verified, I’m afraid.

The largest in the human-known universe perhaps.

If you're making a left turn - inch into the intersection a little so that people have a chance to go around you.

Just don't do this in Missouri (St Louis, at least) - It's apparently against the law there. And, since that's so counter-intuitive (and counter what we were taught in drivers ed) for most of the rest of us, it was actually announced to students at my kid's college during freshman orientation so that they were "warned".

Here's my latest pet peeve---people who pronounce words that start with "st..." and pronounce it as though it is "scht.." I thought Michelle Obama gave a great speech, but it srove me NUTS every time she said "stand schtrong!" and if she used the word STRONG once she used it a dozen times. It is not a speech defect because she can say STOP and STAND why not STRONG?
This is more common than not.
I hate it. It drives me CRAZY and I want to SCREAM (not schcream)

Bring back the sibilant S!

just me being anal

I haven't actually heard this but I will say that ST is easier to say than STR (or most any 3-consonant combination) so that isn't necessarily proving the point.  But I'm not sure where the ch comes in.

I looked this up and found this:
https://www.quickanddirtytips.com/articles/how-s-backing-causes-people-to-pronounce-street-as-schtreet/

I find it very interesting! I have been listening to myself speak and while I don't think I have a marked "Shtr," the s in my "str" sounds noticeably different from (softer than) the s in "st." I found I can only make them sound the same if I turn "str" almost into two syllables, like "starong."

I think this is basically an accent difference. People I have known have completely changed their accents over the years but still retain some aspect of their "native" accent, such as Irish people not being able to make the "th" sound. If not for that one thing their accent has completely adapted to their new location.

People also pick up accents easily and this variant seems to be catching on. People probably don't even know they are doing it.

It does seem specific to "str" and I assumed that only accents with a rolled 'r' would keep the sibilant 's' as the tongue is already in position to roll the 'r'. It's really difficult to go from a sibilant 's' to a soft 'r', your tongue is literally in the way.

Similar to the pronunciation of "stupid" which can be schtewpid or stoopid.

it’s statewide.

this wasn't a pet peeve until it happened to me. Going to sit down in the barber chair and having hair all over the chair. And then getting charged $40 for it!

I didn't know anybody still went to a barber shop.

Getting a phone menu and they say hit 0 for operator and when you do, it says "I do not recognize that as a valid entry".  (You get this when calling the BOE.)

And - they still call Bolden - Jefferson in the Elementary School options.

In new vehicles the low beams are like high beams for some reason.

My 2 pet peeves are 1. people who are intolerant of other people's culture and 2. The Dutch

What’s wrong with the Dutch?

Pet Peeve: people making references to decades-old movies that spoofed spy thrillers and spawned catchphrases that middle-aged dads still bandy about from time to time.

Baby.

True dat... but when the car gets close and you see four headlights on, or a full set of smaller lights, it ain't the low beams.

Well, when you're in a normal car and they're an SUV, even those low beams become a problem, especially if you have astigmatism like I do. Basically the issue is super-bright LED headlights. It's easier to drive in the dark, but not so much just after sunset. For me anyway.

Another pet peeve! I pay more now and I have less hair! Another pet peeve - restaurants that have an overpowering smell of cleaning supplies.
