X country skiing

anybody go out yet and make tracks?  Would love to get out tomorrow but don't knoe if it's too deep. TIA

It was lovely at South Mountain Reservation this afternoon, decent set of tracks along the closed-off section of Crest Drive, to the lookout. I saw two guys heading out as I was coming back, and they were making a trail along the fence of the wildflower area, so there's probably a good out-n-back trip.

anyone know of any other places?

I prefer the reservation on the north side of SO Avenue. It's less rocky.

Two places were mentioned in the "Blizzard" thread:

Thompson Park in Middletown offers flat groomed trails and ski rentals, about 45 minutes from Maplewood.  Note that they may get wetter snow in this storm due to ocean warming effects.

Jockey Hollow (Morris County)

I went in the reservation today...parked at the entrance to the dog park and paralleled the wild flower enclosure, then went on the paved roadway all the way to the end by washington rock.  it was lovely.

slightly OT but I just bought a pair secondhand. Can anyone suggest a tutorial? I've never been but my husband and daughter want to go skiing and I'm not one for heights, so I figured I'd try this instead.

There are some good video tutorials on YouTube, like this one. People will tell you you don't need a tutorial because it's just like walking, and that's sort of true, but it's not a completely natural motion, and I found a little bit of instruction helpful when I was starting out. I still fell down a bunch of times, but at least I had some idea of what I was trying to do.

One piece of advice I got was to think of the basic position as similar to the Groucho Marx duck walk. That turned out to be pretty helpful!

Think ice skating but slower. You want to push and glide.

They often offer group lessons at High Point State Park.  I don't think there's a lot of snow there now, but it's worth a trip when they have a good snow base (about 75 minutes to get there).
