Why is Trump such an Airhead, or is he Machiavelli Redux?
I suspect that Trump is unaccustomed to such intense scrutiny of what he says. The pressure will only increase so he has to learn to be a politician or implode.

Discussions of Trump should never have been in Politics to begin with. They should have been in Arts and Entertainment. That was the mistake made last summer.

Trump is very smart. He understands, instinctively or otherwise, that politics is partly about entertaining the masses. People would do well, at this point, to not underestimate the man. I expect that he will start to evolve his campaign rhetoric more towards center right. If he does this, be very afraid. If he does not, I will feel better.
My biggest worry about Trump is he is so much about the show that I have no real idea what he stands for. If, in fact, he stands for anything at all. He has been courting the lunatic fringe to get the nomination; what will he do to get the majority or electoral votes he needs to defeat the democratic candidate? And it is all facade. We have no way of knowing what he will do in office. And that terrifies me.

Yep... there was a line on WNYC this morning that quoted his campaign manager saying Trump has been "playing a part."
In a weird way, it actually scares me less. He is NOT the social conservative that he has occasionally claimed to be on the election trail, so perhaps in office he wouldn't be either. And I imagine some of his past quotes will come back to haunt him as they always do.
His quotes are such a mishmash I find it difficult to understand how anyone could be so naive as to think he really stands for all they desire and believe. That he has chosen to pitch his rhetoric to the stupidest, nastiest common denominator is what I find so unsettling.

Yep. Clinton and Sanders, by contrast, do not worry me. We have a pretty clear idea of how they will behave in office.

I think so. He's manipulated the far right wing racist base which dominates the Republican primary into voting him in.
Now he has to change broaden his appeal. The far right wing racists will still support him. They'll still assume he's one of theirs even if he tones down.
And as you said, we don't know who the real Trump is.
My prediction is that he's not going to change his style or tone at all. This is exactly who he is and he is proud of it. He's pure narcissist.
I think he's going to lose it when he has to debate Hillary. Because he can't argue based on facts, he'll resort to his usual bullying. He'll be reduced to an invective-screaming hot mess.

...which many of his supporters prefer. But hopefully the majority will not.
