The NY Jests

Francesa goes off!

Geno wasn't a first-round pick. The Jets chose two players ahead of him. He was only cemented into the starting role when Rex bizarrely left Sanchez in to play behind a third-rate line in the fourth quarter of an exhibition game.

They didn't have a lot staked on Geno at that point. They could have treated his early games last year as a premature audition and made contingencies (veteran backup/drafting another QB) in case he wasn't NFL-ready at that point. Instead, they anointed him as a ready-made franchise quarterback, which just isn't the case for most guys drafted at 39 (and in a notably poor QB draft).

It's one thing for Rex to tell Geno and the media that they have confidence in him and that he's the man of the future, but in the Florham Park meeting rooms there has to be an honest appraisal of his ability. I think what happened (and it's happened in several other situations as well) is that Rex and the team told everyone that Geno is a franchise QB and wanted so hard to believe that it was true that they didn't plan for the very real possibility that it wasn't.

I think Rex is a loyal guy who loves his players and is very concerned about giving the appearance that he's undermining them by contingency planning. He's also someone who's such a great defensive planner that he tends to think that he can take castoffs and turn them into an elite defense---look at the current cornerbacks. He might have trusted Morhninweg to do the same thing with Geno.

There is a fundamental lack of execution on the part of the offense. Thank god they have a tough second effort guy in Ivory or the running game would not look as good as it does. More often than not they make yardage on busted plays- hitting guys who are standing still after they've already run their routes (interception heaven). How often do you see the Jets hit a receiver running in stride? You play NE and, boom, on their first offensive play, Brady hits a receiver slashing over the middle for five yards. Sometimes the Jets can't execute a crisp, quick short passing play like that in a whole game.

Chalmers1--that summed it all up perfectly!

Vick, btw, IS that veteran backup who should be able to step up and steady the ship or at least make them more competitive. He is certainly on the downside of his career, but he was not terrible in 2012 when he last was a starter with the Eagles.

There is a lot more wrong with the Jets than simply the QB situation.

It's not a matter of if Vick gets hurt, but when Vick gets hurt. They better get Simms ready to go.

they have a guy on their roster who rushed for over 1000 yards six years running, including a 2000 yard season and they never use him. That says it all about this pathetic team.

It was bound to happen - the next NFL superstar quarterback - Mark Sanchez.

If I were a college quarterback I would ask the Jets not to draft me. They don't develop quarterbacks, and they don't have a team that can win with a developing guy. Very few college quarterbacks are ready to start in their first pro year. Most need a year or two behind a veteran

Give me the tools that Sanchez now has in Philadelphia and even I could look pretty good at QB.

So much depends on the supporting cast and system these days. The Jets suck at both. I have a feeling you could stick Peyton Manning behind center for the Jets and he would look like a has-been real fast.

Well, there's a reason he considered the Jets for about zero seconds before packing his bags for Denver.

Boy did he look like a QB. It helps to have a line that protects you and guys that get open. But its early, plenty of time for him to implode (not that I want him to, I always said he was a class act).

Vick and CJ2K should have been starting from Day One. This pathetic franchise needs to fire their entire management and if the owner had any decency he'd relinquish ownership of the team forthwith.

I'm thrilled for Sanchez and I really don't care for the Eagles - but honestly, thrilled for the kid.

We were at the game this weekend and Vick looked great. Nice to finally get a W but like I told the Steeler fans next to us, "don't worry, they'll screw it up." Sigh.

I'm hearing early Josh McDaniels rumblings, although depends on who's named GM, of course.

I like Rex and he's a great guy, but I've stated before that he will never be a successful Head Coach as long as he continues to abdicate his responsibilities on the offensive side of the ball. Parcells and Belichick are two defensive coordinators who had to make that same transition and did so successfully. Successful Head Coaches do not have a laissez-faire approach to any aspect of their teams; that is what Rex has failed to grasp.

I hear good things about Jimmy Garoppolo if Woody is interested in any other New England spare parts.

Woody's press conference going on now. He sounds like a genuinely nice owner and I am now more of a Jets fan than I ever was based on this comment by Woody during the press conference: paraphrasing about the timing of finding a GM and a coach: "If we wind up hiring a GM before we hire a head coach we will certainly take his .... [pause] or HERS opinion into consideration." oh oh

"Like."

oh oh

BTW, I was accused of being the thread police because of the other thread started about firing of Rex and Idzik and when I pointed out this thread the OP said it was because nothing was said at the time on this thread. However you my sir did make reference to those firings but it was probably too oblique for the OP. ;-)

The more things change the more they stay the same:

"Jets QB Geno Smith Out 6-10 Weeks After 'Sucker Punch' From Teammate"

yup. always a punchline

Do you get to keep your roster bonus when a teammate breaks your jaw over $600?

Not that the Jets would go this route, but I think you could make a case that this is a non-football injury, which would potentially allow the Jets to withhold salary and recover the bonus pro rata.
