The Americans

Matthew Rhys is Welch? I just heard his accent for the first time and my mind is blown.  I had zero idea he wasn’t American.

Isn't that something??! His American accent is the best I've ever heard from a foreigner. There's never any seepage.

I'd been trying to get people to watch/discuss The Americans for years!  No one bit. So glad it finally is getting its due.

[SPOILER ALERT FOR SEASON 6]

The four-minute opening sequence set to the '80s song "Don't Dream It's Over" was EVERYTHING. Superb pacing and editing. Jam-packed with clues. Watch it again if you can.

After seeing this season's opener, think they might do that every season--one song played almost to end. One of the things I've always loved about this show is how authenticly the early-mid 80s are portrayed.  Except I think one would see more American beer and less wine in DC in the early 80s, or at least big jugs of Gallo wine.

And on a show where, at least subconsciously, viewers are on high alert for any hint of non-American-ness.

Season 6 opening song.  Almost as if it were written for The Americans.

It was great. I watched the episode again during my lunch break and smiled The whole time.

ION, Holly Taylor aka Paige is an almost NJ native. Moved here from Canada at age 3, grew up in Wayne and attends Kean.

Frank Langella used to live here.

I thoroughly enjoyed the line/square dancing and it’s song. It was perfect.

The last five minutes of Episode 2 (new season) . . . wow.

Right? Finally I feel like she will have to face real consequences for her decisions. I legit fist pumped into the air at that forest scene. LOL

I wonder if Paige will rethink her career options... ;-)

After the way she reacted to the mugging, and the way her mother has romanticized the role of a spy, I can’t see it going well. My money is on her spiraling and running to Dad the reasonable one. And I’m hoping she does, so Elizabeth can be forced to choose either country or family. Good old fashioned sacrifice.

I can't see Elizabeth ever choosing the bourgeois life. Philip, yes, and maybe Paige ultimately. Plus, Elizabeth has been told that she can't be arrested. So, ultimately, the series may end with her sacrificing herself for her country, leaving her family to carry on. That would seem to me the logical progression from past seasons.

I've finally just caught up.  Love the show, but frankly there are no many loose ends that, at least in my opinion, dead/missing people and no serious follow up, they just seem to leave a path of destruction wherever they go.  Having said that, can't wait for the next episode.

afraid to read this thread thoroughly for fear of spoilers! Just watched season 1 and a half way thru season 2.

I think I am actually enjoying this more since I am watching it on an iPad in bed. Every nuance, facial expressions,  and comments are captured.

I am a bit confused how this couple can be out all night, leaving the kids at home alone. Also can’t imagine, as someone who raised 4 kids, how they kept secret rooms in the basement  long face

I binged the whole series before opening this thread.  grin

They certainly are making it feel like Philip wants the American life and Elizabeth will be loyal to the motherland.  Should be interesting.

What is funny is that they ever bothered to have the brother as a character at all.  My guess is that they wanted to see who out of the son and daughter was the stronger actor - then send the other one out of the house - and eventually off to school.

Henry is going to do some kind of cyberhacking project from his boarding school because he's a math whiz, and will join the family business. I'm wondering what happens to Mischa. I'm convinced that soulless Paige will be better than her mother as a spy, and Philip, who from Season One has proved to be an adoptive American and completely unreliable, will align with Beeman. It's the only explanation for all of the line dancing.

You're not the first one I've heard say that about the brother. I do think he played an important role with the scenes at Beeman's house and as a reflection of Phillip's "American" values. I'm thinking he will have a key purpose in the outcome of this series.

They wanted to portray a very ordinary and typical American Family of that period. Husband, wife and two children, a boy and girl.

Soulless Paige. I expected her to go running into Phillips arms. She is probably going to be more ruthless than her mother.

Paige is the operational equivalent of  Jared Connors, who killed his family. She will be activated in the penultimate episode when her parents face off, though probably  not in the same way. I think.

Mischa will pull off some heist to get money for his son's final year at college.   Henry's team wins the championship.   They're at a diner celebrating when Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" starts playing.   Two figures approach the table with FBI badges:   Beeman and Frank Gaad, who had faked his death.  Credits....

It all comes back to Montclair!

I'm waiting for the moment when Beeman discovers who his neighbors/friends really are! Like Walter White and his brother-in-law in Breaking Bad.

I must not open this thread! I am only midway into season 2.

This has been bothering me since the garage scene in Season 1. I can't believe Beeman isn't playing the long game.

There's almost no way he hasn't known all along.

 Maybe he knows.

OK now I'm convinced.

Yay for Phillip.

This is how it will go down: Kimmy will tell her father about the weird thing Phillip said about going to a communist country. Then it will all collapse from there.

That, or Elizabeth and Phillip will find out they both are HIV positive. It is the early '80s after all.
