TRUMP FOR PRESIDENT

Because I'm a democrat, in general I think news outlets should cover Trump. HuffPost can take a stand for sanity because no one who reads it needs to be convinced of the awfulness of the GOP's field of dreamers.

I know that Trump "strikes a nerve" with many Republican voters, but surely this will cross a line, right?

Appearing on Saturday at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa, the real estate mogul took his running feud with Arizona Sen. John McCain to a new level.

“He’s not a war hero,” said Trump. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

No matter how one feels about McCain's politics, his conduct as a prisoner of war demands respect, particularly from a rich kid who somehow kept getting deferments.

Perhaps Trump doesn't realize that not only did McCain survive more than five years as a prisoner of war, but as the son of a top Naval commander, McCain was offered the chance to go home and refused unless every other prisoner was also released. As if the standard POW treatment wasn't bad enough, McCain was treated even more harshly because of his defiance, enduring extra torture and two years of solitary confinement.

Slimy little thing. Talking about McCain not being a hero while Trump himself took advantage of the five draft deferments he got during the VietNam war.

This is strong evidence that the decision of HuffPost has merit.

The GOP establishment is "shocked shocked" that there is racism and zenophobia among its base and that they are attracted to a candidate who openly appeals to it.

For over 40 years the GOP has been encouraging and exploiting racism in subtle and not so subtle ways, the so-called dog whistle. Nixon forged a Southern Strategy and called for "Law and Order". Reagan began his campaign where three civil rights workers were murdered. George H. W. Bush, the patrician who some think of as a "moderate" was elected by the blatant exploitation of racist fear mongering - the Willie Horton ads and, more subtlely the implication that Dukakis was somehow not really American. More currently the GOP yells about "illegal immigration" and "voter fraud" and engages in vicious attacks against Obama, questioning his intelligence and patriotism. Sometimes they go a little further as when Mitt Romney said "No one ever questions where Ann and I were born".

But of course they can't be completely and openly racist. Again, the "dog whistle", which is why a good number of their supporters, while subconsciously hearing and internalizing the racism, or having their pre-existing racism reinforced, at the same time are upset by what they see on the surface, which they deem as "political correctness".

Now comes Mr. Trump to say publicly and loudly what other Republican politicians just hint at and what the base feels so the reaction is that he is honest and genuine and not a wishy-washy politician.

Corn is right. Besides, HuffPost covers everything as "entertainment" if by that you mean inane sound bites and false moral equivalances.

The media should be covering ALL of the announced candidates - the crazies and otherwise - so that the voters can decide for themselves.

I know ... I'm an idealist.

I don't know why DC political reporters keep referring to this as Trump's "self-immolation". It's not. His fans are standing by him and support what he said.

While I agree he won't be the nominee, he's not going anywhere for now.
