Pope Francis, Catholics, and Christians in the news worldwide

Some really good news! Hallelujah!

Excerpt…

“The rally will begin with Divine Liturgy.

So, did anyone show up?  I was reading about the guy who is behind this and I understand that many of his previous rallies have been, to be generous, sparsely attended.

Good news!

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/09/world/europe/pope-francis-cardinals.html

The article is an example of how awful the NY Times coverage of the Catholic Church is. Two big stories are embedded there, which the NYT barely covers.

“And just over a week ago, Francis appointed Msgr. Víctor Manuel Fernandez, an archbishop from La Plata, Argentina, as prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, making him the Vatican’s doctrinal watchdog …” They barely covered that significant appointment to Pope Benedict’s old job, when he was Cardinal Ratzinger.

And what the article barely touches on as “a major Vatican gathering of bishops and laypeople where various issues will be discussed” is a Synod for which a worldwide process of input (including from all over the United States) from Catholic parishioners has been under way for years.

So, you are saying that no one showed up?

Hmm, the Catholic News Agency story does not make the connection either.

https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/254759/pope-francis-names-21-new-cardinals-including-archbishop-fernandez

They’ve covered it in other articles. The NY Times hasn’t. That’s what I wrote.

As we all know, nobody, or source,  is perfect — not even TNYT!

Hopefully, the distribution of this film will reach more Americans —

Have you seen this film?

When he rescues the girl at the end, is she granted asylum or do border agents tear her out of the hero's arms and send her alone on a flight back the hell hole she started in, according to the policy that you have consistently advocated for?

Some folks are so filled with hate, they can’t see the forest for the trees…

from the CNA article…

“Finally, after eight years invested in bringing ‘Sound of Freedom’ to life, the distributor Angel Studios turns up in the state of Utah, in a town called Provo, interested in helping us distribute the film,” he continued.

“Five days later,” the producer recounted, “we had already signed a contract. Three months later, the miracle: July 4, Independence Day in the United States, the film is in theaters and ranks first at the box office, shaking the conscience and the heart of the country that is statistically considered the world’s No. 1 consumer of sex with children.”

“And the movement for freedom is already a fact, it’s underway, and it’s growing, growing, growing without stopping; they can’t stop it. That is the miracle: That in a world of lies and attacks, the truth makes its way, takes first place, and many lives will be saved thanks to this. Because in times of universal lies, Orwell said, telling the truth constitutes a revolutionary act,” Verástegui said.

The guy who doesn’t want to dump children back into the hands of traffickers for the sake of partisanship is “filled with hate”.

Ok.

On the upside, at least you are consistent.

It's telling the way conservatives feel so comfortable using latinos as punching bags.

If the hero had been rescuing kids from the likes of Father O'Grady, I imagine this film would have received a frostier reception.

From what I've been reading a lot of far right groups have been buying out theater screenings in bulk and offering the tickets to people for free, but the screenings are still mostly empty, and that's one reason why it's riding so high in the box office. Kinda like how the RNC buys up ten thousand copies of Don Jr's latest book and it makes the NY Times bestseller list.

Perspective from the BBC, for Ridski!

That article just confirms what Ridski said.  As is so often the case, conservative grass roots turn out to really be astroturf.

The stuff about the dude's involvement in Q-Anon was disturbing though.

No evidence of your allegation:  I"f the hero had been rescuing kids from the likes of Father O'Grady, I imagine this film would have received a frostier reception."

What is your motivation behind making such evidence-free allegations?

I’ll wager the “evidence” is in GoSlugs’ imagination, as referenced in the second sentence you quoted.

True.  Given the fact that the film is not about clerical abuse, it is hard to collect hard evidence.  That said, if anyone wanted to spend a million bucks to make such a film, I would go so far as to wager a couple of dollars on the proposition that it would receive a frostier reception from conservative Catholics.

I generally try not to respond to RFA as he is prone to misunderstandings (intentional or otherwise).

A scripture quote in the television review rates placement in the Pope Francis thread…

Thought Joanne might appreciate this story:

A Yiddish Haven Thrives in Australia (NYT -- gift link as I don't think she has a subscription)

Oh, I thank you! I hope @marksierra also sees this!
He’s a Yiddish speaker; a couple of our friends, Alice and Benny, are teachers of Yiddish to adult students. I think other long-lost friends (Sam and Edith, for example) are also fluent; and Susie is a glorious singer/muso/songwriter in several languages including Yiddish…she’s usually sold out at Festival time.
My brother, up here in Queensland, still keeps in touch with school friends and has got better at Yiddish (he stubbornly refused to learn it as a kid). So now he stays in touch with some of our late parents’ friends and speaks Yiddish with them.
Our Dad read true Yiddish - written with Hebrew characters - I have some of his books but they’re falling apart.
A couple of other Jewish day-schools use Yiddish as much as English, depending on the teacher and subject. It depends a lot on what the pupils hear at home, obviously.
But what truly surprised me is that Bund youth groups and community/political groups have disappeared worldwide. Gosh. I’m not into the far-socialist (almost communist) range of their philosophy, but there was a lot of good stuff about community responsibility and awareness, teamwork and planning, resourcefulness etc.

More on the freedom film…

https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/254831/sound-of-freedom-makes-history-at-the-box-office

“In over one week, the film increased its weekly gross revenue from $20 million to $27 million, totaling a gross revenue of $85.5 million since its opening.

“Additionally, “Sound of Freedom” made box office history when its revenue increased by 37% from the previous week’s earnings.

“Bradon Purdie, head of theatrical distribution for Angel Studios, said in a press release published on July 16: “There have only been 10 wide-release movies in box office history that have had a second-weekend increase greater than 35% over their opening weekend. All of them achieved this milestone during Christmas. Angel Studios is the only studio to accomplish this feat during the summer blockbuster season with ‘Sound of Freedom.’”

“While the entire summer movie box office lineup is underperforming, our small independent film continues to grow week over week. Driven by millions of fans and supporters, ‘Sound of Freedom’ has become a national — and soon international — movement for change,” said Jared Geesey, senior vice president of global distribution at Angel Studios.

“Sound of Freedom” tells the true story of Tim Ballard, a Homeland Security agent who, after rescuing a young boy from traffickers, learns that the boy’s sister is still captive. He quits his job and puts his life at risk as he embarks on a dangerous journey through the Colombian jungle to save the little girl. During the mission, Ballard ends up saving 123 people, 55 of whom are children.”

And, vulnerable kids are told this by “professionals”….

From what I've read of this case, this looks like medical malpractice, and her lawsuit should help bring to light more cases of misdiagnosis.

It's such a hard thing.  I know of trans people who are in a much better place following transition.  And I know of some who remained deeply troubled and ended up committing suicide.  I would hope that medical professionals exhibit great restraint before taking any irreversible steps.  I look back on the way my mind worked in my teens and 20's and I am glad I never had to make any irrevocable decisions regarding my body.

The WPATH Standards of Care guidelines are a good place to start here, and it's worth noting that they very recently updated those guidelines, for health professionals to follow. The guidelines cost $75 to buy, but there's an FAQ here: https://www.wpath.org/media/cms/Documents/SOC%20v8/SOC-8%20FAQs%20-%20WEBSITE2.pdf

I'm lucky in that the trans people in my life are happier after the transition (not all have had surgery) and I will fight against anyone who wishes to remove their right to the pursuit of that happiness. As someone who has taken a tiny amount of **** from so-called "normals" for wearing make-up and skirts in my time, I'm fully aware that I know absolutely nothing about what it's like to have gender dysphoria, and my only wish is that those who do are correctly diagnosed and helped as much as needed.

And it would be really nice if those Party of Trump elected officials who are defunding and/or banning trans care were acting out of concern for the patients.
