Seeking Recs for strobe and DVD Player

Time to prepare my Xmas list, but I'm having trouble deciding brands and models.

A)  Speedlite- I have a micro 4/3 Oly pen pl1 and would love an off-camera flash.  I'd like tilt and swivel. I'll be using it only a few times a year and I don't need a pro model.  Indeed probably would be well served by a non-rechargeable.  Pro/mag reviews of current models glow, but user reviews, after several months use, are often damning.  Want to stay under $100.

B)  Portable (traveling) DVD/CD player.  This is for me so think quasi-adult not kid in car.  I'm hopeful of  getting a couple of Great Courses to go w/ it.  Prefer 9" screen and option to hook up to TV.  This will be used for playing those lectures so superific pic and sound not as important as longer term reliability.

I've spent a bunch of time researching these and have become more confused than helped.  For example the top 3 players by a rating site all had 20%+ negatives from users.  If you have some REAL experience in these prod areas I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

I haven't seen gadgets that are just DVD players in a few years. Perhaps the only remaining models still made are super cheap. I've found that a laptop does a good job at this, but that's overkill if all you want to do is watch videos.

Thanks for your time Tom,

My laptop died and has been replaced by a desktop (Mac mini).   My portable is an iPad2, so neither is an option.  Unfortunately many of my vid lectures are highly visual otherwise a cd player would do.  Posted a request on the ISO thread and email to fam & friends.

found a used puter.  So now looking for recs for a  reasonably priced speedlite.

Yongnuo. Unique photo sells them. Amazon sells them. I have 2 of the older 560iis and have used them in all types of environments and conditions .I've paired them with pocket wizard plus x triggers. Yongnuo makes their owner triggers and there other companies that make $20 trigger sets for off camera use. As long as you have. Standard hotshoe on your camera you should be good.

@F,  thanks.  I,ve gotten recs for that brand for some time.  I even had one of their models just about set for my Xmas list.  Lately, owner reviews have been very mixed to downright poor.  Main complaints are that the  newer units over heat and fail pretty quick.  Comp. has short warranty period (90 days)so failure occurs after expiration.  Neewer has some similar complaints.  Both have been downrated for poor to no cust support.

This isn,t a huge purchase, but the only photo equip prob I,ve ever had was with a top of the line vivasnit flash.  That was several decades ago... Guess industry hasn't moved forward much.

havent read the reviews in awhile. I know that many new flashes have some form of "radio" in that that works as a trigger or transceiver for triggering. Others have ttl ettl or ittl compatibility.I had the last of the non radio yongnuos. They were pretty much manual dumb units. Set the power and either leave them in manual attached to a trigger or put it into optical slave.

I think the more crap they pack into these cheap flashes the worse they get. I know a pro that still uses old yongnuo 460s. I dont think they have an lcd on back they're ancient but lack tons of potential trouble causing features
