on the contrary the mets infield is something to brag about. Wright, Cabrera/Flores, Walker, Duda and D'Arnaud. Not forgetting about Plawecki, Tejada and a rising Dilson Herrera. although the Mets should have gone out and got a true 3B back up for Wright.
The Outfield is a top notch N.L. offensive outfield if Conforto's numbers last year bear out over a full season. and not sure how anyone could reasonably categorize Cespedes as inconsistent. the only truly inconsistent thing about him is the uniform on his back. the guy has 2 straight 100 rbi seasons, would have likely had 4 straight had he not played in Oakland.
only their bullpen shows a weakness and not a big one.
looking at this thing dispassionately, odds are the Mets are a 100 win team barring injury.
Cespeddes is streaky, and the met infield defense wise is average at best.
Grandy has a weak arm and Cespeddes is a defensive liability.
Cespedes does have a canon out there, once he gets to it. And he may be streaky, but when he is hot he carries the whole team (one can say the same for Grandy).
I agree that none of the FA options at 3B are anything more than a one year rental. Flores is in the same category--a temporary replacement for when Wright goes down, albeit a much less fluid third baseman than some of the FA options.
Collins may have bad breath (I would not know one way or the other), but last year he got a lot out of the team, so I will cut him slack on the breath thing.

He's an average fielder at 3B, and he may have some upside as a hitter. The list of free agents is made up mostly of guys on the downsides of their careers, or guys who aren't much of an upgrade over Flores. I suppose Justin Turner would be an interesting possibility on a rent-a-player deal. The rest? Meh.
