Ohio Adventures

There are also the Akron zips, Ohio bobcats, and the Toledo mud hens to root for.  Great mascots.   Ohio after Texas could be the biggest football state.  Everyone needs a team, so my advice is to pick a team and go with it.

Yeah, the problem is that our family has dual allegiances here. Some of us live in OH, some in MI, and my brother, who lives in OH, has a lake house in MI.

We'll have to make do.

In grad school, I lived with someone who took OSU football very seriously, but had a fiance who grew up in Ann Arbor MI and was a Michigan fan. On game day, she told him not to come over, because she didn't want to watch the game with him.  He thought she was joking.  She took the portable TV and watched the game in the bathroom, to his amazement. They've now been married 30 years or so -- I don't know if they still watch the game separately, watch it together, or if they have transferred allegiance to the university system where they have both spent their entire careers.

Yeah, there's a Skyline Chili not far from me. I guess I'm obligated to give it a try. Maybe grab a coney too.

The Skyline Chili is better than I expected.

Miami Redhawks, Kent State Golden Flashes, Cincinnati Bearcats, Bowling Green Falcons, Wright State Raiders, Dayton Flyers, Youngstown State Penguins, and so on.

Proud Golden Flash here!!

My husband (a Yankee fan but not a Mets hater) and I (a Mets fan and a Yankee hater at least while George was alive) watched the 2000 World Series in separate rooms. Oh and because I was/am the more avid/involved fan my son became a Mets fan. grin

Well, having been a student at Michigan, although I never went to a game, and having limited love for Ohio State as fond as I am of Jim Jordan question [disgusted sarcasm] , I'm afraid I wouldn't be that supportive of Drummerboy's new Ohio State teams.

Fond of Jim Jordan? lol!!

I was being sarcastic, I'll add an emoji.

Just seeing JD Vance’s name in print has the power to make me nauseous. However, on a happier note, drummerboy, you need to work on getting yourself invited to an Ohio wedding that’s going to have a cookie table. It’s a regional tradition like no other, and most receptions even feature to-go boxes handed out to guests at departure.

Oh look!

It's raining again!

LOL

Cookie table sounds like a right good idea.

I think I'm gonna have to buy a darn raincoat.

My cousin experienced this at a wedding of her niece's in the Pittsburgh area this fall. She described as something quite extraordinary. So I'll second that suggestion. grin

New computer arrived today. Woohoo!

And no rain today, though they're forecasting snow showers for tonight.

Went to my first Whole Foods in OH today (for an Amazon return, not to shop). Interesting. The interior is quite different than the NJ stores. Lots of glass with a very open feel. Didn't spend a lot of time there so not much else to report.

More than likely a function of the age of the store rather than geography. They’re opening a brand new one on lower Broadway in the old BONY building this week that has that open feel.

yes, i agree with that.

meanwhile progresso soups are on sale for 1.50. I thought I might miss out on that. It's one of the high points of the shopping year for me.

yeah, I need a life.

The WF at Hudson Yards is pretty impressively large.

(Hudson Yards in general has that strange emptiness-in-excess feel of late-stage capitalism vibe, but still kind of interesting to walk around in)

Actually, the Progresso thing is kind of a big deal! I like to have a can or two of certain varieties on hand as a preferred comfort food, and the other day at Acme in New Providence, they were $4.89 each.

Oh I agree! And funny thing, I went to an Acme today myself, where I saw the sale. Was pleasantly surprised.

I've always got some Progresso soups on hand.

Briefly saw some sun today. Yay.

So I think I finished going to every supermarket chain in the area today, except for Aldi, of which there a couple nearby.

Otherwise, we've got Giant Eagle, Acme, Marc's, Meijer's and Heinen's.

And, of course, Walmart and Target. Neither of which I ever go to for a full shopping.

Marc's and Meijer's don't have liverwurst. I don't understand this. Meijer's is ok other than that. Marc's not so much.

OTOH Marc's had Sweetango apples, which I've been looking for this past week. No one else had them.

Heinen's is sort of like King's. Unnecessarily expensive.Though they came through in the pinch when I needed fresh rosemary and thyme on Christmas Eve. Paid through the nose for it though. I won't be going there too often.

There are no Whole Foods or Trader Joe's within a convenient distance. Whole Foods I can do without. Would have been nice to have TJ's nearby.

So I'll probably spend my time between Giant Eagle and Acme. Mostly Giant Eagle.

I hope this report was as exciting for you as it was for me.

It’s always interesting to get “the lay of the land” in a new place and establish new routines. Hope you’re having fun!

What’s notable about Heinen’s is that like Kings was at its founding, Heinen’s is family-owned. (Kings is now Albertson’s/Acme, and regular shoppers report not being happy with a lot of the changes made.) A few years ago, Michael Ruhlman wrote a book about the grocery industry, with a focus on Heinen’s. I highly recommend it. You will see grocery shopping in a whole new way. I never eat a baby carrot without thinking about that book!

That's interesting (the book, that is). Apparently there's a very famous Heinen's store in Cleveland housed in an old bank that's a popular tourist attraction.

Forgot to mention the Sav-A-Lot grocery store. Not much to say. Pretty cheap and kinda depressing. Has the vibe of a very low-rent Aldi's.

I’ve been to the downtown Heinen’s. It’s truly worth it just to see the ceiling. Great coffee, too, and they sell interesting regional beers, many of them by the single can, which makes for fun souvenirs I’ve brought back for people in NJ.

I drove from Lowe's to home without the GPS today.

Progress!

I went to what apparently is one of the better Italian markets today, DeViti's, and was disappointed.

It's basically like Pastosa's in Florham park, but maybe 1/2 the size. They actually had some Pastosa products ( mostly frozen pastas). I was excited by Pastosa's when I first discovered it, but I eventually soured on it. A lot of the glass case stuff was of poor quality, I thought. Poor taste anyway.

And I wasn't enticed by the much, much smaller glass case at DeViti's.

They do have Brioschi though, which I like to use when I have an unsettled stomach. Hard to find.

I bought a couple of things from DeViti's but I'm not expecting much. I got spoiled in NJ after I discovered Uncle Giuseppe's in Morris Plains. (I miss their fried cauliflower.) I'm sure there's nothing like that around here. But I'll keep looking.

I'm having a hard time trying to get an Ohio license. The problem is proving my new address. The allowed documents for that are very restrictive. They wouldn't accept a medical bill because of HIPAA, which makes zero sense. They wouldn't accept a USPS mail confirming my change of address! They wouldn't accept a bank mail because it was for a 109x and they only accept 1099's or some nonsense.

grrrrrr

I think I may have figured out their puzzle though, and will try again on Tuesday. (Monday is a Federal holiday, right?)

Got my Ohio license finally (sort of. right now it's just a piece of paper) Took 3 trips to motor vehicles but it was pretty painless. Office is close by and they're very fast.

Snowing again. Looks like we get the edge of lake effect snow. That's ok. I like to watch it snow and I have the nice big patio doors to watch it.

Still having battery trouble with my car. Bought a new battery, had the charging system checked out, and everything looks ok, but if I don't drive it everyday there's a good chance I'll have to jump start it. So now I'm driving around with a portable jump starter. As soon as I get my NJ title straightened out I'll be shopping for a replacement.
