New Starz TV Series - Outlander (based on historical fiction series starting in Scotland)

Anyone else read Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series? (I still have to pick up the most recent book that came out very recently.) Love her series and am so excited to see how it looks on Starz - counting down the days!! I know at midnight I could watch it online, but would rather watch it on TV (and force my husband to "hopefully" become a fan with me). Just read this review and thought I would share for anyone who is also a fan or who is thinking about checking this new TV series out - http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20838958,00.html?hootPostID=65dcbf5d0f73b196a0232b052b7cc558

Also this preview gave me goosebumps - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAS01FFj1fQ

I love her books but we don't have Starz. LOL can you also what h it on youtube? I don't mind seeing it a day or two later

Have not read the book, but I will definitely be watching the show. It looks fascinating. The commercials have grabbed my attention in a big way, but I love historical fiction and anything vaguely like it.

@dk50b - LOL I am not sure if it will be on youtube. I haven't heard. If I see anything about other ways to watch, I will definitely post to you!

@PeggyC - you may have a new series of books to read (or listen to - I prefer listening)!! The series starts in the highlands of Scotland in 1743 (before Culloden) and by the 8th book (that was released in June) the author has led the reader to the Revolution in 1778 with the lead characters now in the colonies. PERFECT for someone who loves historical fiction! oh oh

Jerseyred, my favorite series of historical fiction books is the Chronicles of Lymond, by Dame Dorothy Dunnett. Every tried it/heard of it? It's really incredible. It's set in Scotland in the time of the Tudors (England), with Mary Queen of Scots as an infant at the center of a multi-country tangle of diplomacy and plotting. I wish so much that someone would think to make a mini-series out of those books. The writing is amazing.

I will have to try the Outlander books. Sounds right up my alley.

PeggyC - will definitely look into the Chronicles of Lymond! Thanks!!

I read the original book shortly after it was published in the early 90s and have since read the entire series (book 8 was published earlier this summer). The writing style isn't for everybody, but the story (especially the first 3 or 4 books) is good, swashbuckling fun. With time travel! And kilts!!

It is now shortly before 10:30pm and I am sorely tempted to actually stay up until midnight (something I do only rarely) when Starz is making the first full episode available. Yes, I am in TOTAL SQUEALING FANGIRL mode over this adaptation.

@jerseyred - if you're still up at midnight, I understand that it will be available on demand as well as online :-D

Does anybody have a copy of the first book I could borrow? The trailer caught my eye but I really like to read any books that are made into movies or TV shows first!

@wallflower - I have more than one copy around here and would be happy to loan you one. PM if you're interested.

Thank you! Will pm you as soon as I can pick it up.

Along the same lines, she wrote a series called The House of Nicolo, about a man who was apparently the ancestor of Francis Crawford, the "hero" (more like anti-hero for most of the series) in the Lymond Chronicles. Also amazing. And she wrote a stand-alone book on the historical MacBeth, called King Hereafter. I just love that woman's writing.

How do you view the episode free on your TV? when i try it tells me I need a Starz subscription ;-(

I watched it this afternoon for free on YouTube. I would have loved to see it on the big screen, but this was easily done since we don't have Starz. I loved it. I became a fan of the series when "Outlander" was first released - I thought they did a good job with what I saw today. It might be time to reread the first book since it's been so long since I did.

I always dreaded the books being made into a movie because I never thought they'd find an actor & actress to do justice to the characters of Claire Randall & Jamie Fraser. I was pleased with the casting though & really enjoyed Episode 1. I'm going to have to figure out a way to watch the rest of the series because I don't think my husband would want to get Starz just so I can watch this time travel romance/historical fiction.

@mergele - thanks for letting me know!! My husband is away until tomorrow, but I think I have something planned for his return!! (I have realized that I really want him to watch it with me and "hopefully" become a fan!)

@jazznet - I am so excited to watch it and am thrilled to read that you "loved" it!!! YEAH! I have seen trailers and have been feeling that the casting really fits what I pictured. I am just so happy that this is a series and not a movie - I definitely think a movie could never do these books justice. I do have some friends who have added Starz despite husbands and boyfriends not "getting" it!

@dk50b - wanted to be sure that you saw jazznet was able to watch the 1st episode on YouTube, but it sounds like only the 1st one will be available.

For those who don't have Starz, I am reminded on when I was a teenager and my friends and I would gather at a friend's house once a week to watch something on cable that not everyone had access to. Actually, my family has done this with watching our college basketball team on the Big Ten Network (for some time we actually went to the Parkwood to watch because Pete had the channel and was ok with us sitting and watching there!). So, maybe you have a friend with Starz who would be open to giving Outlander a try and it could be a weekly or every other week thing? Could be fun!

I believe STARZ is $6.99/month on Verizon. Do you have to subscribe for a full 12 months?

@jerseyred - there is hope! After watching this first episode alone with my coffee yesterday morning (squealing and bouncing on the sofa), I watched it a second time with DH last night. He was intrigued and is looking forward to the 'regular' season starting next week grin

@mergele - that is awesome!! fingers crossed my hubby has the same reaction!!!!

wish I could answer goalinmind2's question - maybe someone else knows? I have Cablevision and Starz is part of the package we have had for awhile now...so we can watch Homeland on Showtime.

hahaha!! That is fantastic!

I watched the preview. I'm getting Starz!

@mergele- I ended up downloading the book to my Kindle after watching the first episode because I loved it so much. Thank you for your offer of letting me borrow your books!

You go, @wallflower! Let us know what you think (gushing and squealing is totally expected).

Is there going to be any other way to watch it than to subscribe to Starz, does anyone know? I'd be willing to pay per episode to view it, I think, just don't want to sign up for Starz. But I REALLY want to see this series. Saw the first episode & it is haunting me, in a good way. I think the actors did a fabulous job.

Finished the first book! I was up til 4:30am because I couldn't put it down and then finished it this morning. Guess that's a sign of a good book!

I wanted to stop reading at certain parts, mostly Randall parts, and when Jamie "punished" Claire, but really couldn't stop myself. It makes me wonder how they're going to portray some of those scenes in the show..

In some ways, books 2 and 3 are even better. But that's just my opinion...

Reading the 2nd book now! I'll check back with my opinions. Already totally thrown off and wondering what the hey happened.

@glover how are you not on this thread??????

We have FIOS & called to inquire about Starz - the cost is $15 per month for us, but I think it was $7 per month if we signed up for a year. So now I'm wondering if there will be some other way to see this series, perhaps not right away, but on a per-episode basis. I haven't been able to find anything that says it will be available on iTunes or Amazon or Netflix. Has anyone seen any info on this? Thanks.

@jazznet - I haven't heard anything about it being available anywhere else, but I did find a blog on the series that looks like it is being kept up-to-date. You might want to keep an eye on that: http://outlandishobservations.blogspot.com/p/starz-tv-series.html

I did see where someone commented on a Facebook thread several months ago that she has been able to purchase other Starz shows on iTunes - https://www.facebook.com/OutlanderTVSeries.starz/posts/626680664057813 - see Beth Brown's comment

@Jerseyred, thanks for the heads up on that web site. It's very informative so I'm definitely going to follow it. And reread the books in the meantime. oh oh
