Help, 45 lb dog just ate almost a pound of cheese archived

spontaneous,

You're right. The About.com pages say that they use the lower limit because that's where _some_ dogs start showing effects like the ones you describe. That's not a toxic dose.

Nothing on cheese at that site, but I suspect it has the same effect on some dogs' digestive system as on humans'.

Yeah, I'm jealous. I can eat milk and cheese only in small quantities. Red and Booger love milk. Miranda doesn't bother with it.

Did we ever find out how things, um, came out, with Mickey's dog?

If I remember correctly, everything came out alright in the end.

Dear All:

I am not sure where this rumor started but please know that Dr. Rao Mallampati and the JAC did not part on bad terms. As a matter of fact Dr. Rao Mallampati has volunteered his services (most of the time free of charge) for many years. He has also recently decided to come out of retirement for the sole purpose of running the spay and neuter program right at the JAC. Thanks to some wonderful people a room was converted into a state of the art surgery room and Dr. Mallampati will be able to spay and neuter right at the JAC. The organisation is extremely thankful to the good Doctor for doing this for them.

As was stated Dr. Mallampati would have not taken in strays as he has always referred drop offs to the JAC or the appropriate animal control officer.

To the cheese issue:

Cheese is not toxic for dogs. As a matter of fact some cheeses (like cottage cheese) can be beneficial to their gastric lining and is used in connection with rice to help dogs with severe collitis. What is not good is the salt and fat in most processed cheeses. If given as a treat it should be used sparingly as many dogs (especially young ones and elderly dogs) are often lactose intolerant. Cheese can cause severe diarreah in certain dogs and can cause collitis is some. However cheese is used in many dog treats and should be considered a bit like junk food. A treat here and there is fine but it is in no way toxic nor will it cause permanent damage to a dog.
