Giants fans - what do you think about Odell?

Beckham is the most exciting offensive Giants player of my life and the Panther with the bat is a jerk, but this to me seems like someone in the Giants office went culling through video to find some ostensible prior behavior that justified what OBJ did.

nobody had to go through anything to cull the video I posted.  It was from the Fox telecast.  Millions of us saw it in real time.

I'm not excusing what Beckham did.  But this is different from kids quarreling.  These are elite athletes who can seriously injure each other.  The first offenses should have been penalized.  Period.  If the officials allow that sort of thing to continue, it's only going to escalate, if for no other reason than players are going to feel they need to go on the offensive if the officials aren't going to protect them.

The video of the guy with the bat is meaningless.  The bantering and "hand play" is meaningless.  Spearing a defenseless player in the head with your helmet is a level of "play" that can't be tolerated.  Glad he got suspended.  His out of control behavior this season could cost the Giants a playoff spot.  Yes, I know, his exceptional play is a key factor in the minimal success they've had as well.

Eli, TC, and Beckham should have sucked it up and said that what he did was wrong and should never happen again.  Don't defend this guy.

As a Giants fan watching the game with a Carolina fan, I was completely embarrassed by Beckam's conduct. That said, both the officials and Coughlin should not have let it get to that point.

The body slam should have been immediately penalized. Who knows if things would have escalated if that happened?

Heard on WFAN that the NFL actually posted a montage of all the bad altercations yesterday. They are encouraging this crap.

Well, here's the video that Louisville can send along with their order so they know how to use them.

Look, I'm not defending Beckham, that was a cheap shot, but you need to look at the entire picture of what went down, including the above link and early game body slam that didn't draw a penalty.

Yeah, I'm a Giants 'homer', so shoot me.  The kid screwed up and he's now paying for it, along with the team and it's fans, but it takes two to tango here and clearly, that is obvious, if you at least want to be objective

the helmet-to-helmet was egregious, and the suspension is deserved.  But the referees let this game get out of hand right from the start.  The body slam of Beckham by Norman took place right in front of an official.  And Beckham even gave himself up, turned to the official with his arms up, and then Norman body slammed him.  I'm not condoning anything that happened after that, but to me the refs gave Beckham and Norman a pretty clear message -- go at it, guys.  By the time they started throwing flags, the incident had boiled over.

I think some discipline is also in order for the officiating crew.  A flag on that first body slam, and who knows how the game might have proceeded?

Good comment, couldn't agree more.

I hope the suspension is upheld and served immediately. Much worse, to me, would be any chance of the appeal somehow dragging on so that he ends up being out Week 1 next season.

LOL at all the NYG homers in this thread. OBJ\ODB himself spoke in the off season to Dan Granziano of ESPN about how the one way to stop him is to make him angry. A DB's 1 job is stop a WR. Yes Norman talks a ton of smack & is very physical. OBJ can't take that kind if play. Blueprint to all the DB's in the league right here. What sent him over the top was him not being able to beat one of the top DB's in the league.

Go look at what Julio Jones did, walk away. Don't escalate, Norman and Jones didn't resort to an MMA match.

As for the bat, leave it to the NYG org to make excuses, for a motivational tool, about "bringing the wood!" Looks up their film, they have had the bat every game. Really? You were threatened? He was going to attack you with a bat on a football field? SMFH!

You'll notice that OBJ is the physical instigator with Norman and Finnegan more. Still don't see why OBJ isn't also flagged for removing his helmet on the field either. Does it all the time to complain.

That's pretty scary

Some good points, but I'll just respectfully note that he beat Norman on the first bomb (drop) and on the game-tying TD. I think his drop made him snap more than inability to beat a top DB. He gets this physical stuff from opponents pretty much every game. This time, first since last year's Rams game, you're right - he lost it, he shoulda been more Julio, and he let his team down.

OBJ did score the tying TD on Norman.  Let's not forget that either.

When Beckham was matched up against Norman and actually concentrated on running the pattern, he seemed to get open. I wish someone had made the point to OBJ that all of the stupid stuff helped the Panthers. He should have literally run away from the fighting, which, incidentally, would match his job description as a wide receiver.

But that would not have been, as Ray Lewis so unironically put it last night, defending his manhood.

Ray Lewis is an embarrassment.  ESPN has no integrity.

"Odell is young and immature, but a man has to stand up for himself. Like the time my buddies and me stabbed two dudes for making fun of my solid white suit."

What??!

"Uhhhh, I mean. Uhhh."

**scatters papers from table and runs**

Rae Carruth does not approve of OBJ's behavior.  Not one bit.

who is this side judge #120?  He needs to be disciplined too.  How much more obvious could this foul have been?

XfC1WEPKReQ

In Hockey that's offsetting penalties, one for the infraction and one for Diving or embellishment.  Does anyone really think that little shove will drop an NFL player?  It was a penalty but there is no way I would call it a body slam.  Look for opposing teams to try to get OBJ upset and off his game, it may be the one way to top him.

I'll take OBJ on my team any day.

I hope he believes this:

STATEMENT FROM ODELL BECKHAM JR.

I owe some people an apology. I wasn't raised to act like I did the other day. I am not here to make excuses for my conduct. This isn't about anything that was said or done to me. This is about my behavior, and I am responsible for my behavior. People expect better from me, and I expect better from myself.

First of all, I apologize to the organization I represent, the Giants, and our ownership, John Mara and his family and Steve Tisch and his family. And Jerry Reese, who drafted me and gave me the opportunity to be a part of this organization.

I want to apologize to Giants fans. They want to be proud of us, and proud of players like me who represent their team. What happened the other day was embarrassing to them and embarrassing to me.

A lot of kids look up to me as a role model. That is a responsibility I accept and take seriously. Many of the parents of those kids have asked since Sunday what they should say to their children about my conduct. I don't have the perfect answer, but I think one thing they can say is how I handled myself the other day is an example of how not to conduct yourself. I displayed poor sportsmanship.  And those parents can also say that when you act like that, there are consequences. And I hope to be an example of somebody who did something wrong and learned from it.

I owe Coach Coughlin, our coaches and my teammates an apology. They have had to answer for my actions, and that's not fair to them. How I conduct myself is my responsibility. I let my coaches and teammates down.

I am blessed and privileged to play the game I love, and I will do all I can to carry myself in a way that honors the game, the NFL, my team, my coaches, all my fans and my family moving forward.

Very late response with the holidays, but if this was an authentic apology and not scripted by his PR ppl it would have come before his appeal was denied, not after.

This statement was from December 23rd.  The appeal was denied the same day.  It's hard to tell which came first.  It's possible that the Giants asked him not to issue an apology until the hearing was held.

After

I think he is going to be emotional, and unrestrained, and impulsive throughout his career and I think its a good thing.   He's a great player and I'm thankful that the Giants have him.
