Essex County Tudor Homes

I wanted to create a resource for fellow owners of lovely and historic area Tudor homes. From stucco, slate roofs, custom woodwork, leaded and stained glass and other needs that are unique to our homes, this can be a great resources for recommendations and advice.

Great idea !!! On facebook there are a lot of town centric groups. You might want to do a search and post there directing people here.

Also, since we are on the border of Union and Morris Counties, all with their fair share of Tudor homes, you might consider calling this Essex/Union/Morris County Tudor Homes.

I'll start with my favorite recommendation for a chimney repair /stone mason. Kirt Thoren of Thoren Restorations. An expert craftsman who is scrupulously honest, fairly priced and a pleasure to deal with.

How often do you have your chimney serviced? Also, any reccos on someone who works on the timber portions of the facade?

My experience with Thoren has been in Chimney and fireplace repair , not cleaning.

I broke the piece of stained glass in my tudor door last year. I took it to Studio J in Paterson to be repaired and I was very pleased with their work.

Does anyone have a current suggestion for someone who repairs stained glass in the home. We have a broken door side panel (and general touch up work), and have been stood up, had calls go unreturned, etc.

I'm tired of looking at my temporary patch, and need to try again to get it fixed properly.

Stain Glass Repair or leaded glass window repair (in home) Jimm Carroll

He's a stained glass artist -- does exceptional work.

Has anyone else seen buckling in their leaded windows? Ours curve out gently, not sure if this is just natural aging/settling, or bad.

We had stained glass windows that caved inward. They have an x lead design and we had them removed, repaired and reinstalled. The results were fabulous. We also had him reglazed our extremely large leaded glass windows with lead and he replaced all broken panes, on site. We used John Kiritis at 973-725-8226. He also repaired our interior wood work, restoring it to its former glory. He is a true craftsman.

Generally speaking OrangePurse, is it obscenely expensive to do this?

If anyone has traditional exterior paint color combos they'd like to share (chips that they've used on their Tudors), I'm all ears!

@JDidot I was just going to ask the very same thing. Planning to paint this spring and looking for a historic alternative to white/cream and black. Thanks.

Benjamin Moore

Stucco - Grand Teton White
Timber - Bittersweet Chocolate
Windows/Shutters - Cottage Red

Our front door is cottage red and I love it!!! For a brow you could also look at Benjamin Moore's "wenge".

Sorry, brown not brow!

This is very interesting, thanks!

@Cpshell...you might try an architectural salvage place. This ine has some amazing (though v. pricey) Tudor stuff: http://www.materialsunlimited.com/tudor-mediterranean-french-revivals-1900-1940/

They make custom stained glass at Studio J (see my earlier post above). If you describe what you want, they could likely make it for you.

I don't recall the exact costs, but it was substantially less than replacing the windows. My husband thinks it was about 750 -1000 for both windows. John explained that the window is placed in water to soften the lead and straightened out. To avoid the bowing that in the future he placed some lead rail (diameter of a pencil) across the width of the window and problem solved. It took a few weeks from start to finish and was well worth it.

For those of you who have had your stucco repainted, A question: We have the option to paint our stucco with either an elastomeric paint (which is, from what I understand, a rubberized paint that is supposed to stick better on top of old stucco) or a good quality exterior latex paint.

I've been researching both, and while some folks recommend elastomeric paints for old stucco, others mention moisture retention issues down the road. Does anyone here have experience with elastomerics? At this point I am more than a little confused...

Thanks to all,

J

How much roughly does it cost to repaint the stucco and timber on a standard sized SO Tudor?  Ballpark

There  seems to be a trend around the country to paint the (usually) stucco and the half-timbering (usually not structural) in colors that hardly contrast at all, with especially light half-timbering.  A friend of mine who works in architectural history says that, even if you like that, it's not historically correct.  If you care about this, there should be a fair amount of contrast, with the darker color at least a medium slate gray, chocolate brown, or maybe moss green.

Agreed, most of the local Tudors are a yellow/white stucco with either dark brown, grecian blue or gray timber.  How complicated/expensive is it to re-paint and restore these elements?
