Essex County in NYT's Upshot

Immigration, including illegal immigration is the engine of urban renewal and vitality. To the extent that anything is saving NJ it is immigration that is. Without immigration NJ would be a wasteland.

I clearly stated immigration is needed.  Unfettered illegal immigration can not be a good thing. 1. it undermines the rule of law 2. there are limited government resources  more people less per person.    3.  Its great that people are willing to work but supply and demand matters too.  Too many businesses hire illegal workers b/c they will be work cheaper and enforcement is lax.

Why would NJ be wasteland without illegal immigration?     If in fact the state  needed People then the LEGAL process of allowing immigrants could be accelerated. You may not be aware there is LONG list of people waiting to be LEGALLY enter the country.  Nowhere is it written that anyone and everyone should be admitted.(not to mention some sort of health screening)     You seem to prefer granting rights to people who broke the law and are here vs  those following the rules  or MOST Importantly those Born here who  HAVE rights.

I think you will see in  the future more concerns raised by the inner city communities about illegal immigration.

ramzzoinksus -- No, wherever you live was ALREADY in Essex County, one of the original counties from when counties were first formed in N.J.   Springfield was ENTIRELY in Essex County from its founding until 1857, when Union County was formed by secession from Essex County (Union County being the last county to be formed in N.J.).  This caused Springfield to be split, and parts like the present Millburn, the western fourth or so of Maplewood, and possibly a small part of Livingston (from what I've read)  REMAINED  in Essex county.

Unfettered illegal immigration is a myth.  Our borders are tighter than they have ever been, as demonstrated by the risk and expense incurred by anyone trying to sneak in.

@sjdd, Do you realize that the article discussed Essex County, NJ specifically because you live there?

"How The Upshot turned a national story into a local one as well."

Yes, I now realize that the feed was directed my way (via social media) due to my residence in Maplewood.  I assume our neighbors in Newark received the same story on their Facebook page.  Wondering what the conversation is like on the community message boards there.
