Delta (Oakland/Valley)

i get gas at union fuel on morris ave in union pretty much exclusively. Clean, well lit, staff isn't talking on cell phones. Generally pretty cheap.

So you've got 3 Delta's, two of which are regularly accused of cheating customers.

The Exxon in SO that's always about 30 cents more than the state average.

Then the high school Shell that walks off with your change.

Maybe it's time for a Leaf.

I go to the Union 66 (formerly Denco) on Springfield Ave at Millburn Ave in Maplewood.  I haven't heard of or experienced any scams there and their prices are usually pretty good.

Bastards at Denco 66 whatever it is copied my credit card and used it at a home depot in NJ while I was in another state, ironically at a gas station. They were attempting to make a large purchase while i was on the phone with the fraud department. Wish I could have seen the look on their faces.

I like pumping my own gas. that would cut down on some of these shenanigans!

Come to Australia! It's standard practice here for everyone to fuel their own vehicles.

It is in most states except for NJ

twice I bought gas there (76 gas station)... charged me for 21 gallons when my tank is only 20 gallons with a 1/4 tank left....

don't go there anymore... just stick with the bp down the road which is usually the same price or cheaper

So all you folks who have stopped going to these stations -- which ones DO you go to now?

Can I count on these scams not happening if I go to the brand name stations?   (Exxon, BP -- and I don't remember what the third station on the corners of Springfield & Vaux Hall is now; used to be aMobil, I think.)

I've used Delta and Denco because they're convenient.  Probably haven't been as vigilant as I should have been.  But I'd pay a little more if to get gas at a place I can trust will give me what I think I'm getting, and where I don't have to play big brother to make sure that happens.

Which are the "best" stations to use???

Most of this could be avoided if WE COULD PUMP OUR OWN GAS!

When is this stupid law going to be changed?

New Jersey and Oregon are the only states in the USA where it is prohibited by law to pump your own fuel.

The Delta on 577 at the intersection of Route 22 was selling regular unleaded / cash price at $1.639 as of Saturday.  The next cheapest I saw over the weekend at 'major' stations was like $1.779.

Filled up my tank from almost empty to full for $20.  Can't remember the last time that was possible.

I never pull up so far that I can't see the numbers, and I do watch carefully.  An open window and a turned head might make an attendant think twice about any shenanigans.  Never had a problem that I was aware of.  Be diligent and enjoy the low prices while they last!

No matter where I go, I always look at the tank and I always pay cash.  I'm cheap and refuse to pay the credit card surcharge of 8-10 cents/gallon.

I like the Delta gas station at the corner of Irvington Ave and Riggs/Tichenor in South Orange.  Never had any problems there.

I have been going to the 76 station on Springfield Ave. just before the turn-off to Millburn Ave.  Quality gas, nice attendants, new and well-lit pumps.  I will also stop at the Union Fuel (corner of Morris Ave. and Burnett in Union) if I am driving by there anyway and happen to need gas.

Also, I always pay cash.

76 on Springfield (Formerly Denco), Union on Morris and Burnett.
Always pay cash, always know what's in the tank and how much I should need.

Paid 1.599 this afternoon on off-brand on Rt. 1, probably South Brunswick.

I pay cash. I ask for a specific amt such as $15 or $20. I can do the math (ok, on my smart phone) and figure out how many gallons I should be getting.  No hassle, no trouble.  Yes, even when the cost was at a premium I would pay cash and ask for a specific dollar amount.  I use the 76 station at Springfield/Millburn Aves most times.

You can still be ripped off with that method if you don't look to see if the meter starts at zero.

I agree the 76 station at Springfield & Millburn is the best priced and most trustworthy of the local stations.  Also refuse to pay the now rampant credit surcharge, so I never had any issues there.  How long ago was your fraud attempt, Freeway?   Did it go beyond the credit card company?  I can't find any reports where the Delta on Valley was ever cited, but I never buy there because it's always higher than both the trustworthy Delta in SO and 76.

Continuing the tales of rip-offs by the College Pl Delta, a while back I got something like $2 less than I paid in cash.  Of course the impossible to read pump displays make this very easy.  How the State hasn't demanded these be fixed after the unending stream of violations is beyond me.  In any case the attendant reluctantly gave back the small overcharge after claiming I asked for the amount he pumped or some non-excuse excuse.  Haven't been back since, and never had a problem at the Tichenor Delta.  Why anyone aware of the shenanigans would use that station is also a mystery.  I mean, how many local stations make it onto the local news?

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2015/09/03/delta-gas-station-alleged-overcharging/

In 2009, the owner was found to be diluting premium with regular.  Someone had to prove there is such a thing as bad publicity, but obviously not enough folks are aware of his reputation.   I wonder if he will ever be shut down as he richly deserves.

Two more gas pointers I always share in these threads.  First, for anyone unaware, there's a number of sites that track prices, the best being this one.

http://www.gasbuddy.com/

As for the chain that consistently has the lowest prices and doesn't surcharge, that's Speedway (ex Hess).  Closest are in Union and Irvington.  Maplewood's imminent Wawa will also have those features and free air.

There's also the question of gas quality.  Some car makers require or recommend Top Tier fuel, which markedly exceeds EPA standards for detergent additive, giving optimal performance and lowering emissions.   Another plus for 76 is that it's Top tier.  A negative pointed out previously is 76 is owned by Koch Industries.  So caveat emptor!

http://www.toptiergas.com/

It was at the 76/Denco were my credit card was stolen. fraud was about 3 years ago. Was it 76 then or still denco? I contacted weights and measures. They were useless. All of my money was refunded and I was issued a new card. Card issuer said that they'd "handle the rest". I left it up to them.

76 could be the only gas station in a 20 mile radius and I'd walk the distance to get gas elsewhere. I wont even get air there.

again Union Fuel on morris ave is my go to for gas.

1) they guys running the pumps actually interact with you "hello sir/ma'am what can I get you?" . Upon you stating your fuel order they say it back to you verifying what you said before pumping.

2) the pump are pretty new and the displays are clear and easy to read.

3) guys pumping gas aren't talking on headsets in a foreign language to god knows who. While I'm assuming the bulk of these conversations are harmless timekillers it wouldnt be too difficult to pass credit card into to someone elsewhere "yeah chuck? This a-hole has no clue what I'm saying. His card number is 123... Want to go buy a floorwaxer at homedepot with this idiot's money? Great! Pick me up around 5."

I wish we had pump your own here.

Last evening's news had a story on some NJ gas stations as low as $1.479 yesterday.  I believe they were around Edison.

Oil futures closed around $31/bbl yesterday.  Enjoy it while you can.  These prices may put a lot of producers out of business, so they won't be around to boost supply when prices finally rebound.

$1.52 on stuyvesant ave in union. I'll be in edison today ill try to see what they are there

Remember when they cleaned your windshield and checked your oil? And air was free?

Hell, I remember when gas was $0.29/gallon grin

The best I can recall is $1!  Both may sound like a bargain in today's dollars, but it actually wasn't.  The price of gas finally caught up with inflation in 2006 after being well below since the dawn of the auto age.

http://inflationdata.com/articles/inflation-adjusted-prices/inflation-adjusted-gasoline-prices/

Looked at on that basis, gas was more expensive in the mid '50's.  $0.29 then equals $2.54 today. Currently gas is actually cheaper on an inflation adjusted basis than during the Great Depression.  The inflation adjusted average price would be $2.62, so anything below is a good deal.  If this lasts, we're headed for a new record low price.

I recall a time when most motorists would routinely tip the gas station attendant.

A lot has changed.

What with it being banned and all, we missed our chance to wish self serve a happy 50th in December 2014.  It took the 1973 gas shortage to make it something consumers wanted.  A mere 17 years after self serve was introduced, every state but NJ and Oregon made it legal.

And here's about our state's odd situation and the low likelihood of savings from allowing self serve

When I got here it was around 99c. The phrase was that a gallon of gasoline costs less than a gallon of water.

For me, the ability to pump my own gas is not about cost savings.  It's about convenience.  I can get my gas much more quickly in other states than in NJ.  I'm tired of waiting for the one guy pumping gas for 5 different cars while he's talking to his buddy on the phone.

I've gotta ask. Why are these guys always on the phone? I know the guy inside is ordering Pepsi or Doritos or something for the store - but the guy pumping gas? How can you find that much stuff to discuss on the phone? It's incredible.
