David Ortiz a Hall of Famer?

Sosa is borderline based on performance -- he didn't have a long enough, sustained period of high level play, imho.
Neither did McGwire...or Mantle.
Seriously though, I'm not sure how you exclude a guy that hit 600+ home runs in the 90s and early 00s - all the pitchers were on steroids for crying out loud.

I could be persuaded on Sosa too. I looked back, and I had forgotten how many years he was good. My recollection was that it was 5-6. It was more like 10 seasons. And I've been pretty consistent that I'm generally inclusive when it comes to the HOF. I would have voted for most borderline candidates of the past 20 years.

McGwire was never subject to testing. that;s why he didn;t test positive. Re Arod--Imho, this is a guy who is gonna hot 35 HRs without juice at age 40 after taking a year off from baseball. That's HOF proof any way you cut it.

Apparently, the residual benefits from steroid use lasts many, many years.

Eta: see e.g., Justin Gatlin.

I watched Pedro Day at Fenway yesterday on MLB Premium and the announcer had the temerity to introduce Ortiz as a "future hall of famer". I almost spit out my overly acidic chardonnay.
