Current marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana died in a road accident Sunday night outside the Rift Valley town of Eldoret, Kenyan police confirmed.
The 24-year-old Kenyan athlete, who was driving a Toyota Premio, and his coach died at the scene of the crash, Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge told CNN.

Steve Lawrence, of Steve & Eydie. Age 88.
Steve Lawrence, the entertainer who spent decades as one half of the iconic singing duo Steve & Eydie with wife Eydie Gorme, has died at 88.
A rep for the Emmy and Grammy winner tells ABC News Lawrence died on Thursday from complications due to Alzheimer's disease.
Born Sidney Liebowitz, the Brooklyn, New York, native began his entertainment career at just 16-years-old after winning a talent competition.
He met his wife and singing partner-to-be when they both appeared on Steve Allen's "Tonight Show." The pair were married in Las Vegas in 1957.
Oh, ^ that’s very sad news too. My siblings and I have lovely family memories of sitting around the tv, enjoying various specials and regular performances on variety programs. A very talented pair, and it’s sad they’re now both gone.
I’ve just read that Akira Toriyama, Japanese animator and manga creator, has also recently passed. He was aged 68years.
The Rasberries were the "Ur" power pop band. Their early 70s guitar chiming, lovesick pop rock songs cut against the rock radio grain of the times. Great stuff.

I could still sing "All By Myself" in my sleep. Some names just zoom you right back into the past, just by their mention.
74 isn't a terribly short life. Anyone who still lives longer than I have already has had a good dose of life. But the "Raspberries" were definitely part of the rolling stone that the Beatles tipped off and so, a historic marker in my book.

If you get a chance to see Not Quite Hollywood, it’s a fantastic look at a time when people were willing to do almost anything to make fun and exciting cinema. Schlocky and gratuitous and made with 100% enthusiasm for the craft. I hadn’t seen or even heard of half the movies they talked about, but it’s a great doc.
Devastated to read of the death of the painter and writer of Babar, the elephant king books. Laurent de Brunhoff, 98 years, died at home in Florida.

Babar was created by his father Jean, and Laurent decided to continue and expand the immersive children’s series. Yet it never seemed merely a child’s picture book with a brief story - instead, each book could capture your imagination and lead you into a colourful world with magical playful animals, luxurious plants scenting the air, and wonder on every page.
Very glad for both Jean and Laurent, and their beautiful creations. Children’s librarians around the world will treasure Babar the Elephant King, and comfort him and his fans.

If you grew up in Connecticut, as I did, you knew Joe Lieberman well. A throwback to how politicians were regarded in a past I can still remember.
A Democrat who chose to become an Independent. Rumors are John McCain really wanted him as a running mate, but "the Party" couldn't swallow that. To think, we may never had heard the name "Sarah Palin".
He was a big proponent of Dems and Repugnicans sitting in alternating seats in the Senate, House, and Committee meetings. A big idea, that still makes so much sense.

VARIETY PROGRAMS: THERE's an idea someone ought to bring back. Closest things we have now, I think, are "America's Got Talent", "American Idol", etc. Why not shows that star those who have reached or are near the height of their talent? The best of the best, not even competing against each other? (Who here is over 65 and DOESN'T remember being SO happy knowing Senor Wences, The Beach Boys, George Carlin, Elvis, The Animals -- or even Rodney Dangerfield, Phyllis Diller or Joan Rivers were coming up?")
Do kids still even HAVE recess? Are they allowed to take their phones with them? Bet there's no one on the slide, the monkey bars or the swings -- if they're even still there.

Look up Lieberman in any dictionary and the definition is "see disloyalty". He was disloyal to Clinton first, then to Obama. He should have been a Republican, but he knew he couldn't win in Connecticut that way. RIP

too many wonderful roles to re-list here - read the articles. So many wonderful people in the Arts are dying this year (admittedly, most at a ‘good age’), my selfish heart is aching…there won’t be new work from them, and we won’t be able to learn from new insights they could share.
I loved his voice. And I’m going to miss him on the screen very much.
I’ve just learned that Krystal Anderson, a former Kansas City Chiefs Cheerleader and a software engineer at Oracle, died in childbirth. Her baby was pre-term and stillborn.
Like most people hearing this news, and like her family, I’m shocked and aghast that in 2024 in the USA a woman giving birth can contract sepsis and then die from this infection.
I was even more shocked to read that in the USA, pregnant Black women are at nearly double the risk of dying than pregnant white women.
