Australian Open Tennis

I really like both these players.  Hope it's a 5-set thriller.

What a return to break!  Nice job, Kyle!!

Edmund takes the first set.

I was just reading that Halep leads the H2H against Pliskova 5-1.  That's good news.

I’ve been out all day and returned home just now, clicked here instead of the news first.... gasp! oh oh

Woo-hoo! I like Edmund, guess you can tell. *blush*

Nadal v Cilic - we can’t be happy, exactly, but is the end result a forthcoming match we want?

You have the women to watch (I really hope they get into it); I have to get to bed...

Glad it’s not a serious issue for Rafa.   Just learned about Sandgren also.....Turns channel.

Halep v Pliskova should be good

I watched the first set of Halep v Pliskova.  Kind of a strange set.  Pliskova jumped out to a 3-0 lead and looked like she would take the first set easily.  Halep stormed back and Pliskova didn't have a chance after that.

If you can watch the last game of Chung vs Sandgren, extremely entertaining.

Roger keeps rolling.

Wozniacki was cruising to her first grand slam final since 2014......

Serving for the match at 5-3 in the second set and she collapsed. Second set now going to a tie break.  Stay tuned.

ETA:  Wozniacki avoids the monumental collapse and takes the second set tie break. Mertens just couldn't hang on.  6-3 7-6.

Fantastic three-set match between Halep and Kerber.

My prediction is that Halep beats Wozniacki in two sets.

I like your prediction!

I might actually set my alarm for Federer v. Chung.

pity about the injury. Gracious winner.

Yes, that was a shame.  Same injury that did Cilic in at Wimbledon.  And now Cilic will get a second chance.   Go Roger!!  (or, in Australia, Roga!!)

Did you see Chung’s foot?? How awful that he felt compelled to have to post the pix. Let alone have those injections! I hope recovery is smooth and complete.

Let’s also hope the women’s match goes well.

Halep - Kerber match was incredible!

Very hot and humid night in Melbourne tonight ( I wonder if there are massive storms brewing?), no wonder W's form has been affected! Still playing v well, tho.

Wonderful, painful, hold-your-breath tennis

What a battle. I was rooting for Wozniacki, but even so felt bad for Halep. It was a shame anyone had to lose that one.

Well said.  I was pulling for Simona, but happy for Wozniacki.

It has been an exceedingly Australian summer: hot, steamy, taking a loooong time to let the moisture in the air out into the gardens and rivers...

The Men’s match is nail-biting.

Federer up a break in the fifth.  Come on, Roger!

we’re jumping around and screaming in our house cheese

Great quote:

Since his comeback from a knee injury, Roger Federer has won three of the past five grand slams. He’s astonishing.“

Very classy speeches from both Federer and Cilic.  Can you imagine if the losers of the Super Bowl had to give a speech at the trophy ceremony?

I just found out that Federer sends the parents of his first coach Peter Carter to the Australian Open every year, all expenses paid.  Carter died in a car accident in 2002.

Yes, tennis is an odd sport compared to professional team sports.  All of the stress and emotion is concentrated in just the one person.  Roger's speech was great.  He made me cry at the end when he started crying!  Cilic is a class act as well, as you say.

The women's final put Halep in the hospital.  Dehydration.
