Australian Open Tennis

Davis had three match points at 11-10.   Lost the game.  It looked like she was cramping (which she would not be allowed to get treatment for, but actually her toenail fell off - and she can get treatment for that.  She has a medical time-out while she gets treatment for the toenail.    Amazing.   If she wins this, many people in the US will know who Lauren Davis is.  I hope, anyway.  Even it she doesn't win, they should know!  grin

This is one of the gutsiest performances by a tennis player I've ever seen.

#toenail was trending on Twitter.   Now it looks like Halep might start cramping.

Halep serves it out.  Fantastic performance by both women.

Epic match. Davis looked great but she couldn't close out when she had three match points.

Tennis at the highest level.

Agree wholeheartedly.

Zverev v. Chung, up now, should also be a terrific match.  I love watching Chung.

Edited to add: for those of you who don't follow tennis all that closely, Chung won the NextGen (Top 8, 21 and under) Finals in Milan.  Zverev qualified for NextGen Finals, but didn't participate because he also qualified for the World Tour Finals (Top 8 men in the world, where Rafa, Roger and Dimitrov also were in attendance - Rafa pulled out due to injury).

I could see the stress of the moment affecting her body more and more as that game went along.   And then her toenail fell off.  Really something.

Not to ruin the surprise, but have you been watching??

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-01-21/australian-open-caroline-wozniacki-through-to-quarters/9347132?section=sport I heard a little on the radio as I was driving.   snake (We need a tennis emoticon)

I make sure I'm caught up before I look at this thread.  Nice result for Wozniacki.  She faces Carla Suarez Navarro (one of only a very few women with a one-handed backhand) in the quarters.  Svitolina (#4 seed) v. Mertens is the other quarterfinal in the bottom half.  The Belgian, Elise Mertens, is having a very nice start to 2018.  The fourth round match between Halep and Naomi Osaka should be a cracker.  Kerber took out Sharapova easily and is into the 4th round in the top half.  Kerber looks to be on fire again after a lousy 2017.  American Madison Keys (2017 US Open Finalist) is also into the 4th round.

Yes, great result.  Kyrgios was only mildly obnoxious.

Dimitrov wins!

Top half men's quarterfinals:  Nadal v. Cilic and Dimitrov v. Edmund.  Very nice to see the 23 year old Brit, Kyle Edmund, into a quarterfinal.

In the bottom half, American Tennys Sandgren is in the 4th round, plays 5th seed Dominic Thiem.  Djokovic v. Chung should be a great match; the unseeded South Korean, Hyeon Chung, dispatched #4 seed Alexander Zverev.  Fabio Fognini (banned from two majors for calling an umpire some very nasty names in Italian at the 2017 US Open) v. Berdych, and Federer v. #80 in the world, Hungarian Marton Fucsovics (who I've not heard of, which is saying something).

I’m off to work - one of our almost-90-year-olds will have watching. Can’t wait to hear her views!

Federer is playing now against Fucsovics, who has reached the 4th round for the first time in a major. Federer has not lost a set so far this tournament.  His physical fitness at age 36 is impressive.

Kerber had a hard time with Hsieh and came close to losing but rallied to take the second set. After that it was downhill for Hsieh.

Update:  Federer takes the first set 6-4.

Thanks for the heads up!  Watching now.

So: did you enjoy Federer's triumph?? cheese Commentators couldn't stop raving, on my drive home from work. cheese (he sounded pretty chuffed too)

I watched the first set and most of the second set and then fell asleep. Roger looked good but not great, he hit several unforced errors into the net.  He will need to up his game a bit as the opponents get tougher.

Djokovic is out!

I’m sure given the match was a couple of hours ago, several of you would have at least caught the news by now.

Two big upsets yesterday:  Chung d. Djokovic and unseeded American Tennys Sandgren d. Theim in 5 terrific sets.  Men's quarterfinals:  Sandgren v. Chung, Federer v. Berdych, Nadal v. Cilic, Dimitrov v. Edmund.

On the women's side, the quarters are:  Halep v. Pliskova, Kerber v. Madison Keys, Mertens v. Svitolina, Suarez-Navarro v. Wozniacki.   I'd love to see Halep win her first major.  Hitters like Pliskova tend to blast Halep off the court, so fingers crossed.

Agree.  Federer looked kinda flat.  Berdych doesn't have a horrible record against him (19-6, Fed) and the Czech has been in really good form this tourney.  For all the time I've been into tennis, Berdych was a regular fixture in the top 10, only within the last couple of years dropping away into top 20.

I heard Federer say that he's feeling like he's just really getting into his 'full' (my words) rhythm for the tournament now, which may mean that yes age is having a little more affect than he was willing to admit, plus some of the younger players grew up watching his style and tactics so he has to be more diverse which is harder... But he's enjoying this.

But this news here this morning, which I haven't fully caught up with, is Tennys and ultra-right politics. Huh???

I think also Federer's performance is often pegged to just what he needs to do to win over much lesser opponents.   His draw could have been tricky as Struff and Gasquet - if really on their games - could have troubled Roger.  But so far, it's been smooth sailing.

The big worry was Delpo.  Berdych took care of that.  Roger faces Berdych next.

I was just reading about these reports about Sandgren's politics; came across it by accident.  Not sure what to make of it yet.

First women's quarterfinal:  Unseeded Belgian Elise Mertens takes the first set from #4 seed Ukrainian Elina Svitolina.

Mertens is giving it to Svitolina.  Up two breaks in the second set.

He’s an idiot.

Just saying...

Damn.  I have not read much, but -- damn.  Really?  Sigh.  Tennis is my escape from politics.

Yes.  5-0 now.

That's all she wrote. Mertens crushes Svitolina in the 2nd set.

6-4, 6-0

I was rooting for Mertens.  I watched her play at the Hopman Cup and became a fan.

Edmund was one point away from making it 4-2 in the first set but he let Dimitrov break back. Now 3-3 and back on serve.
