WHere/What Laptop to Get?

So LilMissLL wants and deserves a new laptop. Her main requirement is light and fast. She is looking at the Lenovo Yoga 900 which came out last week or the XPS. There is also last year's Yoga 3.

She wants Windows 10 also. It will be here 30th b'day present and I want to spend about $1000 or so.

HELPPPPPPPPPP! Advice please. Open to all other ideas.

Very happy with my lenovo ideapad, thought about the yoga 3 last year but decided I didn't really need the folding screen. Lenovo has one of the better comprehensive warranty programs around, I'd look at what Dell offers and see what level(s) of coverage are available.

Give her the $1,000 and tell her to spend the extra it takes to get herself an Apple laptop. I'm not being flippant. She will get more satisfaction out of it.

not flippant, but a fanboy.

Thanks Tom, but Rich would have a canary if a Apple product was purchased. There would be no "in-house" tech support with an Apple product. I figure none would be needed but LilMiss needs her Papa to be accepting of her new computer.

We have been very happy with Dell laptops in our family. I am currently shopping for a new one and looking at the XPS line.

Bought a couple of Lenovos with hybrid drives (solid state/ spinning platter) -- much cheaper than all solid state with fast boot ups in summer. Things change so quickly, I would think there are already newer versions of it. Windows 10 works flawlessly, really. if you buy Lenovo (which I suggest), get it directly from them, and google for sales prices/ codes -- Lenovo discounts readily.

In that case, take a look at the Microsoft Surface line. It looks pretty innovative, and it's getting a lot of rave reviews. The others are boring old designs.

Lenovo has been unconscionably lax about letting malware on computers that ship from their factory. They claimed they fixed the problem and it turned out they hadn't. I would give a LONG wait to make sure they have their act back together. I used to be a fan of Lenovo, but I'm very wary now.

My college daughter switched from a MacBook to a Surface Pro 3 and was completely satisfied. She did purchase the extended warranty which she ended up using.

Mircocenter in paterson. Has many brands including dell, lenovo, hp, sony and apple on display and 3.5% UEZ sales tax. Also bring an empty Lexmark , HP, or Dell print cartridge with you for another $3 off.

The Lenovo 900 series looks super sweet, so are the Dell XPS 13 and 15 with a super thin bezel. Also the higher end HP x360 laptops.

For $1000 you want touch screen, at least a core i5 processor, 8GB or ram and SSD storage. More then 256GB of storage is really not needed that much anymore with all the cloud storage options.

If you're worried about crapware, etc. but from a signature edition from the microsoftstore. http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/list/categoryID.69404900?icid=PC_Category_ModG_Laptops_05202015&sortby=ranking%20ascending&filters=

Signature Edition means that they come with a clean version of Windows, not loaded with McAfee, and all other kinds of crapware.

I didn't know about Signature Edition. Good idea. Microsoft gets back at the computer makers. It's about time.

Oh Tom, I think you don't know how urgently some of us want to be bored by our computers! surprised

Sure, boring is reassuring at times, but Apple has shown that your gadget can exceed your expectations, and you can even come to love it. Microsoft is aiming to do that now, too, and so far, the results sound good. I haven't used Windows in a while, so I'm out of touch. My company-supplied computer is a Mac, and I work with Linux computers all day, almost entirely avoiding Windows.

at $1000..most would fit that description...the big issue is to find one with a CD/DVD drive if she wants one..it was hard to find for Windows 8...

I had a list of the processors from worst to best...i would have to search for it....I doubt any high end computers have the atom...but that is the weakest...

and obviously Chromebook doesn't have windows

A lot of people have recommended shopping at the "Microcenter" in Paterson

I just looked a bit more into this. The Dell XPS and Lenovo 900 will both bust above $1000. But the Dell Inspiron 15in 2in1 would fit the bill. Look here for a pretty good machine in that price range. http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-15-7568-laptop/pd?oc=dncwa005h&model_id=inspiron-15-7568-laptop

She should also look at the Surface Pro 4 with core i5 and keyboard.
