When You Say Carolina, Say … Belichick?

The UNC cheer goes:

When you say Carolina, say North Carolina

When you say Carolina, say Heels!

An old college friend (a fellow member of the UNC Class of 1986, so that old) says the hiring of Bill Belichick as the next head coach of the University of North Carolina’s football team may force him to root for Clemson.

I don’t know that I’d go that far. But I could probably get behind Wake Forest.

ETA: For the record, the Heels already had a dismal stint earlier this century under Butch Davis. Didn’t that fill our quota of failed former coaches of the Cleveland Browns?

Hard to know how Belichick will do, but maybe with the new reality in college football, recruiting will not be an issue. Can't see him being good at that.

I'm happy because UNC was said to be recruiting Army's coach, Jeff Monken.  Don't want him going anywhere.

Beat Navy!

Not good at recruiting, not good at yielding to authority (AD, chancellor, trustees, NCAA, etc.), not good at glad-handing (NIL donors, other boosters), not good at being young enough to have years to sort everything out and see his changes through.

Good at having a son whose path to the same job he may be trying to clear, good at having a 24-year-old girlfriend looking at grad schools, good at putting football ahead of any remaining vestiges of a college education.

One of the highlights of the TV-viewing college football season coming on Saturday. I had the pleasure of attending an Army-Navy game in Philly about a quarter-century ago.

Agreed on all counts. Didn't know about his son.

A/N is one of the highlights of my year. My first was 40 years ago as a Plebe! Wish they kept it in Philly. In DC this year. Tix are exorbitant so I’ll be watching with a classmate.
