What is the loud popping sound I keep hearing off Boyden? archived

I live near Midland and Boyden. My neighbors and I have noticed this for some time now: we frequently hear several loud popping/cracking sounds outside but have no idea what they are. They sound like a firecracker or maybe a cap gun but we don't ever hear more than three at a time and it's pretty consistent. We don't think it's a car backfiring because that would be a lot of cars with an issue. I heard it a couple of times yesterday while working in the yard, and already twice today (the first time my supposed-to-be-napping 2yo was yelling "whas dat?! whas dat?!).

Has anyone else who lives the area noticed this? Any ideas? It's starting to drive me crazy.
its gunfire probably

I too live very close to that intersection and I just assumed it was early 4th of July fireworks. Seems like every year at this tiimeI hear it.

Corey oh oh

Actually...was it just recently? I came home to find 2 detective cars and one police car on Orchard and Midland. They left within 3 minutes of my arriving home. I am still hearing sirens nearby and the sound of speeding cars...police more than likely.

Corey

two or three at a time? every few hours? it totally sounds like a firecracker but if I was setting them off it would be a string of black cats .... completely different pattern. and we've noticed the sound for ages. I just finally thought to ask the crowd.

start listening for it, corey. maybe I can get you in the crazy mode too! argh!

I heard all the siren activity too. But no, not in conjuction with the popping. And the detectives/cops just tore up our street as I was writing this!

thanks for the offer but I have enough things in my day to put me in crazy mode cheese lol Detectives are driving by like crazy still...do you hear them speeding up Midland btwn Orchard and Boyden?

I apologize - I will discard my bubble gum.

okay....just heard the popping sound. Is anyone getting work done on their house...maybe it's a power nail gun? I'd think that it would put out more than one nail though........

Corey oh oh

I know that Midland has some real power problems of late.... Could this be a malfunctioning (or soon to be Malfunctioning) transformer nearby?

My only other guesses would be A) A nail gun or B) someone taking target practice in their back yard?

Well, it's several times a day, every day, and I've been aware of it on a subconscious level as long as I can remember. It's only as of late that I've decided to try to figure out what it is. So construction is out. Random gunfire is out (well, I certainly hope so; otherwise I have to move immediately!). I heard a single pop again after posting earlier so that's three times today already (Corey - I think we probably heard the same one). I don't think I hear it at night.

I MUST KNOW! So when you see a crazy lady pacing up and down Boyden Ave, running toward loud noises, it's probably me.

Our other thought around here is that it's some bored person without a day job taking pot shots at squirrels with an air gun. But every day? All day? That's a serious commitment to squirrel hatred.

I have to admit I had that thought as well as I was posting. Defcon - you don't live around here do you?

ctrzaska - can you hear it at your house? i think you're only a couple of blocks away.

When we were getting roof work done last week, there was sequences of 3 popping sounds in a row from the nail gun as they attached each set of shingles. Perhaps someone in the area is having a new roof put on?

NotFrom- I'm at the office but leaving shortly... will ask ctrzwife to get in the yard and see. Having not heard it, but from the description, I tend to agree with SuzanneNg that it may be a roof being done. Does it start at 8am and end at 6 or 7pm?

Definitely not roofing. It's only a few times a day with hours in between. I haven't heard one since about 3:45. And it's been going on for ages. I remember talking about it with my neighbors months and months ago.

Still could be a nail gun. How about paint ball? My neighbors are paint ball fanatics and occasionally shoot in their backyard.

Auto shop or mechanic nearby? Recycling depot? Start guns for swim teams? I think the detonations from the stone quarry are no longer an issue....

so I guess you are sure it's not roofing? I take my kids to borden park and a couple of weeks ago I noticed they are re-roofing a house on boyden right in front of the park....I've heard that 3 nails in a row sound there....

Maybe the roofer gets paid by the hour?? :rolling:

NotFrom - Neither she nor I heard it. Might be too far.

I'm on Elmwood near Highland and I have been wondering what that is, too. I seem to notice it around 8-9 pm.

The thing is, the sound doesn't repeat (at least not for hours) so you can't follow it.

It's driving me nuts trying to figure out what it could be.

Its the sound of thongs breaking (see related thread)?

JUST heard the triple pop myself... 217pm. Sounded like fire crackers. Strange goings-on.

Heard the popping sound around 1:45 or so...three pops. Weird?

excellent! so glad i'm not the only one wondering now. i haven't heard it so far today, but i wasn't around at 1:45 or 2:15.

Malfunctioning air conditioner/heater?

Malfunctioning sprinkler system?

ok, it just happened again. 3 pops. then about a minute later 2 pops. what the heck is it?

Generator of some kind?

Morse code to Osama?

You have TMJ?

Invasion of the popcorn fairy?
