Walpack Wildlife Management Area, Including Buttermilk Falls

Partially cloudy today. Great for the landscape, not good for wildlife.

I particularly liked the Yellow Warbler building its nest.

That's quite a waterfall.

Its the highest one in our state. Little is done to publicize it. Access is through a potholed, gravel road. I guess to give it its due, money would need to be spent on the road and parking.

The access road was closed for several years after the 2012 Hurricane. It also gets closed several times a winter for ice blockage.

Anyway, its worth the trip.

Love the last two photos of the bird in the tiny nest.  What species is it?

You really have to be willing to give your tires a beating to get to the falls but its quite a sight.

 Tires AND shocks.

I am hoping to make a trip to Labrador, late summer. The road from Labrador to Quebec was gravel. Instructions were to bring a mounted spare tire if you planned to drive the road.

Last year it was paved. Now, they loan you an emergency satellite radio in case you get stuck on the road or get in an accident.

If I go, expect iceberg, whale and scenery photos when I return.

Is that a picture of the Flat Brook? I understand that the trout fishing there is exceptional. Beautiful fish and worth a photo as well.

If you like the unpaved thing, go to Iceland and drive into the interior.  A lonely, otherworldly beauty of a kind I've never seen anywhere else.

Please put all of these treasures in a book. I would love to buy such a collection. In the meanwhile, thank you for sharing them with us. After years of globe trotting I have become a bit of a hobbit. You have given me an attack of wanderlust.

Yes, Flat Brook. While we were there, the state guy was there stocking fish into the stream. He would net them and then throw them from the net, into the stream. One of the guys I was with, took a photo of one of the fish in mid-air.

Look! Flying fish.

Wonderful! I love all your bird pix!

My favorites are the waterfall and the tiny yellow bird in her nest...
