Unused Denamarin supplement should not go to waste

Our vet's pharmacy department made a booboo and dispensed this version of Denamarin to us. Keegan is only supposed to take half a tablet, but these boxes have tablets that should not be split in half. That's why we have to use the chewable tabs. The pharmacy could not take them back out of concern that once they leave the pharmacy, they cannot be certain that the product has been stored properly, even if it is unopened.

I'm a pharmacist myself and I agree with that policy. That said, as a pharmacist, I do know how to store them properly and I can attest that they are safe to use. Denamarin is a prescription product for helping out your pet's liver so if you have a need for this, PM me. It isn't awfully expensive but it isn't cheap, so I know that folks on a budget could use a break.

If you're wondering, Denamarin has S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) and silybin in it. No, it isn't a doggie antidepressant, but SAMe has been used for such purposes as a supplement in humans. That isn't to say your dog wouldn't feel happier; it might, but it would probably be from having a healthier liver.

Isn't it illegal to re-sell prescription drugs via the internet? Even dog drugs? If one were to buy these from you across state line, you could be looking at a federal crime.

I didn't say I'm selling it. It wouldn't go across a state line, either. A shelter would not take it, nor any vet's office. Understandable. I do know that the product is still suitable for use.

redfruit still has a good point. You probably can't give away prescription meds either, even if it's vet meds.

My dog takes Denamarin for her liver. I'd be happy to take bikefixed's unused doses if I lived anywhere in the vicinity, legal or otherwise.

Animal shelters won't take donations of prescription meds, but individual rescues are thrilled to have them. The issue here is that Denamarin isn't the kind of med that shelters and rescues use a lot. It's a long-term maintenance med, while rescues mostly need things like antibiotics and pain meds.

with human meds, even giving it away is illegal from what I know, but if the pet has an actual Rx from his vet for the exact product it should be okay.  no reason for anyone to tattle to the authorities.  When I no longer needed some unopened prescription product, I donated it to a rescue.

I am pretty sure denamarin is considered a supplement, not a drug, and can be purchased without a prescription. My dog was on it (died about a year ago) and I got it through Chewy without them needing to contact my vet. Unlike my cat food, which needs vet approval.

Hmmm, we had been getting it through Chewy but they required a script. We had to get those from our vet because Chewy was out of the ones Keegan needs. Yes, it is considered a supplement but I wasn't going to quibble about that stuff. I just know that Keegan is obsessed with it. He would probably do anything we asked him to in order to get that stuff.

My guy hated it ... I had to sneak it into him, and first went to Chewy to get the chewable ones so I could crush it into a treat. All I could get at the vet was the super-hard ones that you aren't supposed to cut.

Maybe I am misremembering script need (after all even my cat's food needs a script) but I am very sure it is a supplement not a drug so probably ok to sell. Just as I am sure it is ok to give away my cat's food if I had reason to do that.

You are a pharmacist though, not me ... I am sure you know what you are doing.

I messaged you.
