Uber vs car service to Newark airport?

We are going to Newark airport on Tuesday and will need a ride.  I've never taken uber before (late adapter I guess, everyone seems to love uber).  It seems like uber could be less money but I wonder if it is as reliable as a car service.  When I have used a car service they always show up when they.say they are going to.  Does uber do that?

Has anyone taken uber to Nwk?  Should we?  Thanks for sharing your experiences...

Many times, and it's about half the price of a cab. never had to wait more than 10 minutes or so. If you want, here's a code that will give you $20 off your first ride (which should cover the trip to the airport); I'll get the same if you use it: skwr5 . Just enter it when you download the Uber app and sign up.

I've always felt safe using Uber, and i like the cashless aspect of the service.

Thanks - should my husband and I use the same code? or should I use a different one?

Can they also pick you up front the airport?  Would they need some special designation or permission?

Good question.  I would love to use them each way if it is cheaper

I also signed up to use them in San Francisco which is where we will be going...

Yes, you and your husband can both use the code--the code is good for the first ride for each account. (and thank you if you do use my code)

And yes, I always use Uber coming home from the airport. It only takes a couple of minutes to get a ride--there's always a driver at the airport. At the airport, the driver calls you back after you order the car to confirm exactly where you are. Again, way cheaper than a taxi. And the Uber cars are in much better shape.

The police are giving them a hard time at the airports.  The uber driver may ask you to sit in the front seat so its less noticeable.  Its waay cheaper and better than the cabs though.

You can page a car when you're at baggage claim or the arrivals lane, and they will call you and pick you up within a minute or two. EWR to Millburn in under $16 including tip. (Requesting a car from the plane or before your luggage comes up is too soon, in my experience.)

You are welcome to use my code for a discount. https://www.uber.com/invite/m3s87

Drivers are quite good at identifying you if you link your Uber account to your Facebook profile or provide a photo.

Thanks everyone - another question.  I know my account is already linked to my cc - so paying is easy.  How do I tip?  Will it be in the app?

Uber says there is "no need to tip," but I have, in cash.

And don't forget to give the driver a good rating (if appropriate); Uber sends you a confirmation email after the ride that lists your cost and gives you a link to do this.

I took uber home from Newark airport this afternoon for $16. That's about one-third of the cost of a taxi. I met my driver within about 3 minutes of requesting the ride. There was no waiting in line, no dirty cab that feels like the wheels are about to come off, no BS extra $5 charge for using a credit card.

It was a meaningfully better experience, at one-third the cost. Almost too good to be believed.

The taxi business is a dinosaur. If there was a taxi stock, I'd short it the minute the market opens tomorrow morning.

yeah, Uber recently lowered fares in NJ and it now is around $15-20 to the airport. Much cheaper than any local car service.

I gave a code too if anyone's interested: connied189ue

You and your spouse should sign up separately. The first time one of you use someone's code and you get $15 or $20 off. The next time, use the other spouses' code and you'll get $15-20 off again plus spouse gets $15 off for your "friend" join.

Yes, Uber fares to all the airports are much less expensive than a taxi. I'm now familiar with all 3 and drivers are not kidding when they say we're not liked at airports. The citation a cop can give a driver if they're caught is serious money and charges can be brought.

This thread is just one sample. When the fare is $0.85/mile & $0.15/minute and Uber takes 20% of that, you have to wonder that anyone is dumb enough to drive.  Anyway, you can read all you want about how drivers are frustrated humans trying to earn decent money. Plus, you'll get to learn a bit about how passengers and drivers rate each other. The way surge works - or doesn't - and how it can really hurt a driver's ratings. Keeping a 4.6/5.0 isn't as easy as it sounds. And how drivers look at your rider rating before deciding whether to accept your ping.

In the Detroit market the rate is $0.30/mile.

I (and the passengers) usually have a good time when I drive but I'm going to stop because of the insurance coverage gap. People can call me for just regular rides though. I still do that stuff all the time for folks who know me.
