I rode my bike from Manhattan to Brooklyn last night. Boy, did I get wet!
There is a significant heavy rainfall incoming in a few minutes. The NWS is using the term "torrential downpour" in the advisory.
I would use "a boatload of rain". We tried waiting it out in the car but gave up and got soaked.
Flash Flood Warning NJC003-013-017-031-039-NYC085-310030- /O.NEW.KOKX.FF.W.0001.190530T2223Z-190531T0030Z/ /00000.0.ER.000000T0000Z.000000T0000Z.000000T0000Z.OO/ BULLETIN - EAS ACTIVATION REQUESTED Flash Flood Warning National Weather Service New York NY 623 PM EDT Thu May 30 2019 The National Weather Service in Upton NY has issued a * Flash Flood Warning for... Hudson County in northeastern New Jersey... Eastern Passaic County in northeastern New Jersey... Union County in northeastern New Jersey... Bergen County in northeastern New Jersey... Essex County in northeastern New Jersey... Richmond County in southeastern New York... * Until 830 PM EDT. * At 622 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Radar indicated up to one inch of rain has already fallen in Union County. Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly. * Some locations that will experience flooding include... Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth, Passaic, Bayonne, Wayne, Hoboken, Plainfield, Bloomfield, Hackensack, Linden, Orange, Bergenfield and Paramus. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots. A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. If you are in the warned area move to higher ground immediately. Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate precautions to protect life and property.
Bottom line: avoid flooded areas. don't drive into standing or flowing water (don't walk or ride your bike into it, either). If the creek rises, get to higher ground.
Thursday, May 30th. Heavy showers likely this afternoon. Because the ground is saturated and these showers may produce a lot of water in a short time, the NWS has issued a Flash Flood Watch from 3:00pm until 10:00pm.
A flash flood watch means the potential exists for rapid heavy run off, urban ponding, and small stream and river flooding. Be alert, and never drive into standing or flowing water (you can't tell how deep it is).
From the NWS:
Flash Flood Watch346 AM EDT Thu May 30 2019
...FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM 3 PM EDT THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH THIS EVENING...
The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a
* Flash Flood Watch for northeast New Jersey, including the
following areas, Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Union, and Hudson.
* From 3 PM EDT this afternoon through this evening
* Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop late this afternoon and evening. Rainfall amounts will average around 1 inch, but will be locally higher in any heavier showers and thunderstorms. Wet grounds from recent rainfall and excessive runoff could lead to flooding of urban and poor drainage areas.
In addition, smaller rivers and streams could overflow their
banks.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.
