When my mom was in grammar school a visiting troop of Native American Dancers came to put on a performance in her school . This would have been the late 1920's . The cost to see the performance was $.05 . One little boy in her class did not have the nickle and would have been left to sit in the class room with the teacher.
My mom waited till the last minute, thinking the teacher might furnish the nickle for the little boy. When she did not my mom gave him her nickle and told him to enjoy.
She never told us this little story till she was in her latter years..............the type of thing about very old memories coming back to one.
She never taught my sister and I much through the usual methods. But we learned a tremendous lot through her examples.
@Author Brava for your Mom ! What a generous spirit.
In my district there is an official policy providing for reduced prices/alternative funding for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. Plus our principal has a "slush fund" that he uses to pay for students who cannot pay - I'm not sure if that is money provided from the district or from his own pocket. He would never take the credit for it.
In my years as an advisor for a number of different extracurriculars there was always at least one parent who asked if they could help fund any student who needed it. Many had "worked their way up" in the world and wanted to extend a helping hand.
I'm grateful to all those who have offered to their time and money. These students need to know that all adults are not thoughtless jerks like their administrators.

I read this with my mouth hanging open. Who would allow children who cannot attend a school event due to finances, to sit in a hot auditorium and hear the laughter of the other children enjoying the event? Now the entire school knows that these children are "poor" and will be surely teased. The principal needs to be shamed thoroughly for not figuring out how to have an event where ALL children are included. It's disgraceful.
