The Trial of George Floyd's Murderer

In his opening statement today, the defense lawyer basically blamed the crowd of bystanders for distracting Chauvin, causing him to kill Floyd. Or something.

If this guy doesn't get convicted of murder, all hell is going to break loose.

All we need to know about what's wrong with this country is that it's now "political" to be against cops killing someone in cold blood.

One kind of remarkable thing is that police are coming out to testify against Chauvin. Not sure when that has ever happened in a high profile case.

 Now?

The next year, on Eighth Avenue in Manhattan, an undercover cop solicited a man named Patrick Dorismond for a drug sale. A fracas ensued, and a different officer shot Dorismond dead.

The mayor began by unsealing Dorismond’s police record, to include his juvenile file. The formerly secret documents shed no light on what happened on Eighth Avenue that night. But Giuliani harnessed innuendo, infamously saying Dorismond “isn’t an altar boy”.

As it happened, Dorismond literally was an altar boy. When this was pointed out to Giuliani, he said: “I think that’s not a correct juxtaposition of statements, nor intended for any kind of decent or useful purpose.” It would take until May for Giuliani to concede he had made “a mistake”.

I too find this remarkable. No "blue wall of silence" or whatever they used to call it.

Also wondering where this trial would be if we didn't have cellphone cameras. But I wouldn't get too confident about conviction here. Much depends on intent.

Chauvin would still be a cop without cell phone cameras.

Unless you believe that cops only started killing african americans after the introduction of cell phone cameras and bodycams

I haven't seen all the testimony, but what I've seen is overwhelming.  I half expect the jury to send the judge a note asking if they can just save everyone a lot of time and declare Chauvin guilty now.  What on earth is the defense going to be? Just that he saw the "angry crowd" surrounding him and panicked?  It was all an accident?  I just don't see any plausible defense they can mount.

I think that the point was that without cell phone video, the MPD would have just covered this up and he would have gotten away with it.

Did you see the chief yesterday? He cut Chauvin no slack at all.

I saw an interview with him that was taped last year I think. The interviewer asked him "What would you say to Chauvin if you were in the same room with him?"  Chief says he would never want to be in the same room as him and won't even speak his name.

We need more chiefs like that.

Testimony today on cause of death.

This case just gets more sickening every day.

The verdict has been reached and will be read shortly.

 What's your hunch?

I'm thinking they will convict on 2nd degree manslaughter 10 years.

I think the quickness of the decision bodes well...

I hope.

I have no hunch. I haven't been able to follow the trial very closely.  It's hard to predict what those jurors will do.

Wow, guilty on all charges!

They did as close to this as they could have legally done.

Wow is right.

Biden is interrupting Jeopardy. Unacceptable.

Meanwhile, Pelosi has a brain fart.

Which I'm sure Fox will make a headline. Let's move on.

now I'm wondering what they talked about for 10 hours.

Just going through the jury charge and the verdict sheet may have taken a while (I don't know if the verdict sheet was just guilty/not guilty or if it were a special verdict sheet which would have contained additional questions).

Have you served on a criminal jury?

I've seen 12 Angry Men many times. Both versions.
