Suggestions for Photo-organizing software

I hope this is the correct place for this question. I have over 100,000 photos (give or take a few thousand) currently stored on my PC. For now, they are stored in folders, by date. This is obviously not ideal, because it takes forever to find specific pictures quickly.

I'm looking at different photo-handling software, and was hoping for some advice from people who have tried different tools out there. What you liked about it, what you didn't, what you might have heard....

I am researching it on my own, but there are a lot of choices out there. We're currently looking at Adobe's Premiere Elements, but it seems as if that does a lot of the organizing and editing for you, and I don't want the software deciding which are my best pictures, or how to crop/edit/adjust them - I prefer to do that myself.

I'd be very grateful for any info or advice anyone might have, and thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to respond.

I've been using Picasa for years, which I love. I use it to edit, organize, even email photos. Unfortunately, Google stopped supporting it a while back, so I know I'm going to have to find other software, too. So far I haven't heard of anything as simple and as good as Picasa.

In terms of finding specific photos, Google Photos and Amazon both have very good search capabilities. You can even search for specific faces--e.g., all pictures of Uncle Jack. Both Google and Amazon also allow some organizing and editing.

One other thought: You can also group photos in Shutterfly.

I too await input on what to use after Picasa.  Loved it, sorry they have let it loose!

So, What's Next?

Best Regards,

Ron Carter

I find Google Photos to be great for organizing my photos...especially for new batches. I can easily create new albums right away or add photos to existing albums.

I still haven't caught up on transferring all my old photos however because my pc is getting rather unstable and that seems to limit how many photos I can upload at a time. Let's not mention how lazy I can sometimes be.

I also like its editing functions.

Joy, I've tried it and was either distracted or too dumb to follow.  I was surprised it wasn't more helpful to get me move old photos over.  May have to look for a "class"

-Ron

I am currently in 40-50K range.  I simply use multiple folders:

At the highest level:  1 per year and 1 for each major subject matter (plants, animals, etc.).

Second tier:  Under each year, a separate folder for each major event (vacation, holidays, weddings, etc.).

Under each major subject, a rough sort (under animals:  Birds, Cats, other mammals, Fish, insects, reptiles, other)

As I download photos, I give each a short name (genus & species for orchids, etc.), and place it in the appropriate folder.

Typically this is a 3 step path to whatever I am looking for (as long as I can remember which year the event took place).

Ron - I teach these types of classes. Trying to pull one together now - bit if you can get a a few people together, I can come to you.
