Below is my post on this thread from 1:45 pm on January 6.

Today, the GOP Senators said that there was nothing to see, no reason to investigate how something like this could happen.

Which means they know they're as guilty as Trump in this.

Let's remember republicans led 7 Benghazi probes.   I guess an attack in Libya poses more of a threat?  When an attack is outside your door - there's no mystery maybe?  At the same time - I

Two Democrats chose to skip the vote, as well as nine republicans.  Is that more or less spineless than a no vote?

"No" votes are craven, with a side either of cowardly or of guilty.

"Skipping" is definitely spineless.

Two Dems? Sinema and who else?

From the Politico Article:

It wasn't clear that Republicans were totally comfortable making public arguments against the commission. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) was the only senator who repeatedly made a strong case for opposition on the floor.

Six Senate Republicans voted in favor of moving forward on the bill, which had won 35 House GOP votes. Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) said he would have supported the legislation with Collins' changes, but was absent due to a family commitment.

Just one of the seven Republicans who voted to convict Trump, Richard Burr of North Carolina, opposed the commission, arguing that it would be onerous and drag into the midterms. A GOP counterargument, voiced by Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, is that the bipartisan commission would be far superior to a Democratic-led select committee that may come any day now.

“If you ask [Louisianans], who do you more trust: An independent commission or one made up of members of Congress hand-picked by the speaker? They don’t trust the speaker,” Cassidy said of California Democrat Nancy Pelosi. He said the commission bill was not a hard vote.

For those who opposed the measure, it wasn’t a hard vote either. McConnell made such an intense case against the commission that the only person’s vote who seemed up in the air was Sen. Portman, who voted to advance the bill after assurances that Collins’ amendment had Democratic support.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), a former acting Intelligence Committee chair who voted against the commission, said it wasn’t a tough call for him. Even if Collins’ changes had been adopted, Rubio added, he would “probably not” have voted to even kick off debate.

“Everyone needs to cut the crap. We know exactly what this commission is about. This commission is about keeping this whole issue in the headlines as long as possible and using it as a weapon to try and subpoena Republicans they want to target,” Rubio said.

Personally, I'd rather have a Congressional committee than the bipartisan one.  The D's gave a lot to the R's for the bipartisan committee. The R's screwed this up.

I thought the Commission was going to be a waste because whatever it came up with would not change anyone's mind.

If anything it will be truer with a Committee set up by Speaker Pelosi. The Trumpites and even some non-Trumpite Republicans will dismiss its findings as biased.

However if the Dems play it right with the Republicans' vote against the Commission it can hurt the GOP with some swing voters.

Trumpism at it's finest!   And as always - the former president will not be held accountable for anything.  And his followers are just as emboldened.

Lies in the Trump world don't matter - never had never will.

 "Fake News"

Six months ago today.

Statement by President Joe Biden on the Six-Month Anniversary of the January 6th Insurrection on the Capitol | The White House

"Not even during the Civil War did insurrectionists breach our Capitol, the citadel of our democracy. But six months ago today, insurrectionists did. They launched a violent and deadly assault on the people’s house, on the people’s representatives, and on the Capitol police sworn to protect them, as our duly elected Congress carried out the sacred ritual of our republic and certified the Electoral College vote.

"This was not dissent. It was disorder. It posed an existential crisis and a test of whether our democracy could survive—a sad reminder that there is nothing guaranteed about our democracy."

The rest is at the link.

By the way, anyone who tells you "Don't call it an insurrection" may as well be a collaborator.

McCarthy taps Jim Jordan, 3 'big lie' supporters for Jan. 6 committee (WaPo)

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) announced which of his members will serve on the select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob.

“The lawmakers are Reps. Jim Jordan (Ohio), Jim Banks (Ind.), Rodney Davis (Ill.), Kelly Armstrong (N.D.) and Troy E. Nehls (Texas),” our colleagues Marianna Sotomayor, Felicia Sonmez, and Karoun Demirjian reported last night.

Three out of the five lawmakers chosen to sit on the committee objected to certifying the election results; all of them voted against impeaching former president Trump; and at least one of the members — Rep. Jim Jordan — spoke with Trump on the day of the insurrection

what a surprise!  NOT!

Pelosi can still reject these choices - correct?

Yes, IIUC. Which she should -- anyone who rejects democracy really has no place being part of a committee investigating an attack on democracy. And Kevin McCarthy really has no place calling himself any kind of leader. What a craven, dishonorable lot they are.

Jim Jordan should be on the flipping witness stand.

Pelosi Statement on Republican Recommendations to Serve on the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol

"... With respect for the integrity of the investigation, with an insistence on the truth and with concern about statements made and actions taken by these Members, I must reject the recommendations of Representatives Banks and Jordan to the Select Committee."

Or in other words, Speaker Pelosi is telling them -

Just saw that. Nancy ain't fooling around.

Good for her - I thought she was going to wimp out.

Nancy Pelosi does not fool around and does not wimp out.

I suggest reading her recent biography by Susan Page.

The gaslighting by the GOP is turned all the way up this morning.

Remember, as the GOP keeps gaslighting about what happened on January 6 -

We all saw it. From page 1 of this thread, on January 6, at 1:43 pm.

Gaslighting, last night on Fox News.

Doesn't everyone here remember how "mostly peaceful" it seemed at the time?

Moving testimony by Sargent Aquilino Gonnell, Officer Michael Fanone, Officer Daniel Hodges and Officer Harry Dunn.

I thought it was important that Hodges repeatedly used the term terrorists.

Sgt. Gonnell's testimony of his immigration to this country and the importance he placed on defending the constitution should be played continually as a public service announcement on Fox News.

Each officer's testimony was varied in perspective so it is hard to imagine anyone not being moved by the presentation, Sgt. Gonnell's emotional appeal,  Officer Fanone's anger and indignation, Officer Hodges, stark labeling of the perpetrators, and the clear emphasis on racism, described by Officer Harry Dunn.

"Riots" were not covered as "mostly peaceful".  Black Lives Matters rallies and marches were mostly peaceful. The riots that arose from some of those were not peaceful.

If the Trumpists wanted to hold peaceful rallies and marches protesting the election results they would have every right to do so. I do not recall their doing so. Instead they held one rally where speakers urged them to march on the Capitol and a large number of them took that as a call to violently storm the Capitol and attack the police. And clearly some of them planed doing that even before the rally.
