Don't be fooled. The mid-terms are under a massive attack.

And before you roll your eyes after seeing the video title, this is not about how the elections will be canceled. Marc Elias explicitly details why this would be near impossible to do. (in normal times I would have not said "near". but, you know. not normal.)   It is about the various ways voting rights are being whittled away.

The biggest threat is the DOJ's attempt to get detailed voter information from the states. The only reason that they would want to do this is to use the data to stop people from voting. There is no legitimate reason for the DOJ to have this data. None at all.

The video ends with a call to action and offers many useful suggestions for how to get involved.

One of the ways is to share this video. So here it is.

And a note about Marc Elias : I honestly think that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for all of the work he has done in fighting for our election rights. We all owe him a debt of gratitude.

it's near impossible to cancel the elections because they'r run by the states. Trump could issue all the EOs he wants, but a state like NJ would just tell him to pound sand.

And in MN, the DOJ is demanding (among other things) they hand over voter data, and cooperate with ICE. Why is this data, unrelated to fraud investigations or ICE raids, being sought, if not for nefarious purposes?

Trump is doing all he can against free elections, except cancel the elections.

Voter intimidation, slowing down the postal service, changing the postal service policy to postmark mail-in ballots, claiming elections are rigged/stolen, pressuring elections officials, asking states to share voter data with federal law enforcement, suing states that don't share voter data, pushing for redistricting in certain states, placing loyalists in key positions, attempting to require proof of citizenship for voter registration, asking states to purge voters that were flagged by the federal government, and so on.

yeah, as I've said before, in such a closely divided electorate, each of those things you've pointed out only have to knock out a few thousand votes here and a few thousand votes there. you add them all up and you can rig the election.

The proper reaction to Trump's fulminations about elections is not despair, but resolve.

Since Elias spends about five minutes on the importance of Trump’s “breaking news” at Davos that “people will soon be prosecuted” over the 2020 election, here’s Democracy Docket’s 400-word report:

https://www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/trump-people-will-soon-be-prosecuted-for-2020-election/

It includes this paragraph:

It’s unclear whether Trump was revealing actual administrative actions coming soon or merely daydreaming aloud before a gathered audience of the world’s political and economic leaders. Trump has often said certain actions were in the works that never materialized, including statements about a new executive order related to elections over the fall.

The news judgment at Democracy Docket led to a brief story with some temperate context. On the advocacy side, Elias followed it up with a longer piece making the points he reiterated in the video.

Mark Warner seeks clarity on Tulsi Gabbard's appearance during FBI raid in Fulton County

She's the person she always has been - an opportunist willing to sell out for some authority, and in this case doing dirty work for Trump.

f*ck whittling. they've switched to a chainsaw

New GOP anti-voting bill may be the most dangerous attack on voting rights ever

This is the Save Act, which hopefully the Dems will stop in the Senate.

Am I confident they will? Nope.

is that how whistleblower complaints are supposed to work? the accused party gets to hide the complaint?

great system we got there.

another day, another whittle.

Trump: ‘We should take over the voting’

President Donald Trump urged Republicans to seize control of elections and place voting under national authority Monday — one of his most explicit signals yet that he plans to interfere with the workings of democracy.

In a radio interview on The Dan Bongino Show, Trump framed voting itself as corrupt, claimed elections were stolen from him and argued that Republicans should take over how ballots are cast and counted.

I don't think so. It sounds like a cover up.

So, now he wants to be in charge of all elections.  Ugghh....Just when I think Trump's appetite for unbridled power to impose his agenda on the nation have peaked, he takes it up a notch.  Anyone who understands the definition and dynamics of fascism cannot help but note the historical parallels.  Unfortunately, his cronies in Congress, the self-righteous members of right-wing Christian churches, and his loyal voters will think this is a wonderful idea either because their vision does not extend beyond their own immediate interests or they admire Machiavellian dictators...or both.

normally, since taking over the elections by the federal government is about as unconstitutional as you can get, I'd be fairly confident there's no chance this could happen.

normally.

not today.

so it appears Trump wasn't just "daydreaming" about trying to prosecute people over the election results

GOP fast tracks monster voter suppression bill that could disenfranchise millions by requiring proof of citizenship at polls

I didn't realize this bill also disenfranchises women who took their husband's surname but have a different name on their birth certificates.

The racism is much more obvious but the misogyny is part of it too.

The SAVE Act would prevent these women from using their birth certificate as proof of citizenship.

“For these women, their current legal name would not match the name on their birth certificate. As a result, should the SAVE Act be implemented, these voters could not use their birth certificate to prove US citizenship in order to register or update their registration. They would instead have to rely on other forms of proof of citizenship like a passport — a document that almost 150 million Americans do not have,” Cherry told us in an email.

“The SAVE Act does contain a provision that would allow states to accept ‘other evidence’ of citizenship if a voter does not have one of the accepted documents. However, exactly what would be accepted or how this would be administered is not laid out in the bill. This ambiguity in the bill’s text presents the distinct possibility that individuals who do not have a birth certificate that matches their current legal name, such as married women who changed their names, would not be offered the opportunity to provide supplementary documentation like a marriage certificate as part of the voter registration process,” Cherry said.

The trick is to come up with provisions which will keep more nonwhite people from voting than white people from voting.

Apparently, they realized that some of their wish list would have interfered with voting by the poor white people who part of their base.

White people going to college, however, aren't desirable voters for them.

I'm certainly aware passports and other documents can be used as ID. But what about women who don't have those other documents currently? It puts up another hurdle to get a passport or an enhanced Real ID. Not everyone has those. But nearly everyone has a birth certificate.

Besides, the whole intent of the legislation is to put up barriers. Some of the requirements will be a hassle for some people of color, or poor people, or women.

All to "solve" a virtually non-existent problem.

ml1 said:

Having not read the SAVE Act, I didn’t know its details, and your words made me wonder whether it would disfranchise women like my wife. So I read the bill and found a fact check dealing directly with the topic. If I was the only one who wondered, and my reply helped nobody else, no harm done.

I believe this bill is subject to filibuster but I'm only about 50% confident that the dems will stop it.

The whole point of the SAVE Act is to disenfranchise as many voters as possible, especially those that tend to vote for Democrats.
If some form of this legislation is passed, it will be challenged almost immediately in court. I think the odds are extremely small it will be in play for the 2026 elections.

Brought to you by the "states rights" people.

It's just that they have situational principles. Just like they were extremely worried about the deficit when a Democrat is in the White House. Or that they are very worried about the value of human life, but only before birth.

a glimmer of hope. looks like the SAVE act is dead

well, not officially dead maybe, but pretty damn close.

yay

(however, see my prior post.)
