Stinky Evening Commute

Right next to me, greasy, foul smelling chinese food. Rude

These people are across from me

The joys of commuting. I have become a commuting crank with a list of things that I try to avoid when picking a seat:

-people talking on their phone

-people with their feet on the seats

-people eating a full meal

-loud keyboard typing

-summer interns that travel in herds and talk non-stop

-women applying make-up

Serenity now!

I avoid anyone with pungent food but it sucks when you select your seat and someone like that sits next to you. Ugh. By the time it happens, it is often difficult to find a seat elsewhere.

So where do you sit -- on the roof? LOL!

I can't imagine anybody's commute on that line that is so long that they can't wait until they get to the office or get home to eat.

I know how unreasonable I sound. A seat on the roof would be perfect! oh oh

Agree on all. I also try to avoid wide people who don't fit in one seat. Small quiet people are the best seatmates!

Men who take off their shoes in the summer and subject the train to their stinky feet.

eww, do people really do that? I can't stand it when my hubby and kids do it at home and those are "my stinkies"!

I admit to being a (light) makeup applier on my morning commute. Sorry, hope you found another seat.

"Loud keyboard typing?" I think maybe you have some sensitivity issues - or maybe you should consider driving in?

At least someone didn't bring their typewriter on the train.

Some keyboards are louder than others. I'll admit I'm on mine on the train. I have a bluetooth keyboard which is pretty quiet compared to someone else's old IBM laptop, but I'm still aware that it could be perceived as noisy in the quiet car, even with my headphones on and try to keep it as quiet as I possibly can. So far, no complaints, though.

At least you're considerate of others. Others, not so much.

Well, yeah. That's because I'm awesome. I made Practical Commuter Magazine's Top 10 Commuter list 2 years in a row.

OK, so modesty isn't one of your strong suits.

Oy. I can remember the days when I commuted by train and sometimes got Thai food from the counter in the Hoboken station. I usually worked late (because it was the only way to keep up with the workload), and was starving by the time I was en route home, and wasn't going home to a situation where I could count on someone else cooking and having dinner waiting for me... and the Thai food was much better eaten fresh and hot. Have some compassion. If the smell of the food bothers you, relocate yourself. I commute by car these days and would like all the whiny train commuters to just shut up and realize when they have it good...

I am the Bender Rodriguez of MOL.

98.7% of the train commuters are just fine.

I guess the smell of Chinese food is better than the car I sat in this morning, someone close had really really bad gas, silent but deadly. I'm still damaged from that

Light application doesn't sound so bad. I sat next to woman once that did everything - foundation, powder, blush, eyeliner, mascara, etc. She finished by spraying some setting mist all over her face. It was the setting mist that sent me over the edge

My least favorite commute home was the time a very well dressed man sat next to me ina two seater. More hipster than Wall Streeter, clothes, shoes, bag, etc...were good quality and expensive. He was probably in media. He took a New Yorker out, and proceeded to read that whilst simultaneously picking his nose the entire ride from NYP to Maplewood. Yes folks, he lives amongst us.

I'm always temped to ask people like this, in a very loud voice, if they need a tissue or simply to stop but I've always been too afraid. On some level I figure if someone is unaware enough to outright dig for boogers on the train, most likely they have a number of other screws loose despite well dressed appearances.
