Resident woodpecker is making holes in our wood siding

Does (s)he know something we don't? I'm hoping this doesn't mean there are insects to be found.

Aside from the what-the-heck-is-making-that-sound noise and the visual aesthetics - staccato holes in about 4 boards - is this a problem, and if so, how do I stop it?

When I go outside and call attention, the bird flies into the nearby dogwood tree, but this has been going on sporadically for a few weeks now.

chances are you do have bugs snce it's a bit late in the season for mating but I don't know if territorial drumming results in holes. I don't think it does...but wait - they do -

Thanks, joy. Maybe a call to Jerry Buckingham is in order to rule out carpenter bee larvae. Then we can festoon that side of the house with foil strips, and hopefully our neighbors don't think we're trying to communicate with aliens. ; - )

Snort. I thought tin foil hats were to keep the aliens from reading our minds

a pinwheel near where the woodpeckers were pounding the siding chased them away from our house.

I had one. I purchased a fake owl (head swivels in the wind) from Home Depot for $20. Put it on the side of the house (mounted on fence post) the pecker, umm wood pecker was interested in.

Haven't seen him since.

Ha, I'm going to get a pinwheel and send him back your way. ; - )

We had one a few months ago that would rattle the house. He perched on the side of the chimney and actually pecked some cement from it. It fell in our driveway and hit one of the cars. They're mean spirited! oh oh
