Recos for LinkedIn makeover person?

Hi, I'm looking to breathe new life into a job search that is pretty stale (I have a job, looking for a different job).

At one point I thought I was good at writing resumes and LinkedIn profiles but now I'm not so sure. as I haven't been getting any traction.

So, I feel I need some professional intervention on my digital presence. Can anyone recommend someone who does good LinkedIn makeover type work at a reasonable rate?

No specific recos of people, but my advice if you have a limited budget is to have a terrific, professional headshot photo as it's generally the first thing folks notice and it stands out. Easy to do as SOMa is full of photographers.

Less copy seems to be the trend on LinkedIn, just a top-line detail for each position, highlighting an actual accomplishment. And work on expanding your contact list, find others in your industry, companies you've worked at, school(s) you attended. Think about key "buzz words" that are important in your industry and category and make sure to use them.

Am sure you can find someone to help, good luck.

An email from this week:

There are so many waiting to grab a share of the pie and it’s more competitive than ever. It also doesn’t help that there is so much ambivalence when it comes to the right job, the right organization and the right direction.   But then, one of the most exasperating aspects of a white-collar job search is that you can apply to hundreds of jobs all day long and not hear a word from any of them.   It’s not that there are people who don’t succeed at getting their dream jobs. Unfortunately, their number is considerably lower than the ones who wait anxiously for that one call or email that can change their life. Most often, this situation can severely dent confidence levels. You may end up dwelling on the situation for ages and in the bid, forget the big picture. I have seen that rejection can often be blown out of proportion and viewed as a sign of failure. Then there are those legion aspects that warrant consideration like your salary quotient, job location, security, profile, position. When none of this works out, I know how dejected you could feel. You’re disappointed. You might even feel like stepping outside and screaming. It is demoralizing, more so, because somewhere you know these obstacles are inevitable.   I get that it can be difficult to hold on to your self-belief when you receive setbacks from potential employers. But then you ought to know that finding a job you love may not be an easy task, but is not impossible!   You need that beacon that can guide you towards the right path. All you have to do is get in touch with the right people and rest assured.   I will ensure that you experience the joys of actually living your dream job within 30 days. If you don’t love it, you can get your money back. Bonus: I will be re-writing your resume and cover letter as a complementary service.   Just click here to order your profile which will 100% help you get your new job!   http://linkedcareergrowth.com/profile-resume-and-cover-letter/   To your future career success,

Hi Smedley,

I'm a Maplewoodian and do this kind of work. I offer a 30 minute complimentary consultation.

From my LinkedIn Profile:

I'm a career and executive coach who helps people identify, get and keep their "right fit" work. Your "right fit" work is what you love to do, do really well, and want to do again.

When you have your "right fit" work, I coach you to be more effective. I can help you build your new business if you decide that working for yourself is your "right fit."

My coaching is based on my 30 years experience in senior leadership positions in NYC, 12 of them as CEO of two major non-profits and 4 as a leader in workforce development.

► I've coached many people to use their talents and passions at work & make career transitions.
► My years in workforce development gave me in-depth knowledge of what employers want.
► I bring a marketing perspective to the art of job search, the same principles I used to raise more than $100 million, using direct response vehicles.

Through research and experience, I developed a system that works to position job seekers to get their "right fit" job. I work with you to identify your core value proposition and then create the marketing documents (aka resume, brochure, website copy, marketing plan, LinkedIn profile) that position you to get your 'right fit' work. I am your cheerleader, editor & support during your search.

As a Recruiting Manager for a bank, I would not say that the photo is the first thing I notice, unless it is inappropriate.

You do not need to hire a professional photographer, just have a good headshot.

And sorry to contradict apple44 on both of his points, but the less information that one has in their profile, the harder it is for them to be matched to a search.

For instance, if I were searching for a Senior Energy Trader to trade US Energy and managed positions, products energy derivatives (non-linear and linear) & they needed to be bilingual; how would I know that the person's whose profile simply says Energy Trader or just Trader (or worse, just Director or VP, etc.) and didn't list the language skills; how would I know that the person had the specific experience I was looking for?

I generally agree with that. Just listing titles isn't enough. And of course being bilingual and knowing a specific language would be an example of keywords to include. I just think that some folks just throw in a lot of copy from their resume without thinking about it. Including industry and job-specific keywords that hiring managers are looking for makes sense.

I took a great one night class on this at the adult school last fall.  You might look to see if it's

offered again this spring.

thanks for the input all. Julia, I’ll drop you a line.
