Pure Pop Masterpieces

I love those 2-3 minute songs, mainly from the 60's, the ones you don't hear that often anymore but when you do, and hear those first few notes, you immediately recognize it and have to listen.

Public/subject. The master.

Just saw Three Billboards. The night They Drove Old Dixie Down is stuck now in the brain loop.. Listen to masters perform this one. Joan Baez, Levon Helm, Johnny Cash, Roger Waters or Tanya Tucker, take your pick.

2:17 and not a wasted second (or time signature).

I remember in Central Park about 20 years ago, a beautiful summer day.  There was a drunk, obnoxious guy harassing people on Poet's Walk. Everyone tried to ignore him but then he started getting violent.  The cops arrived and it took about three of them to subdue him and take him away.  The crowd broke into "I Fought the Law" as he was led away.

Only in New York.

Not sure how many people hear the Bo Diddley beat in this one.

Wait, what? I'ma gonna tell you

Devastation in just over 2 minutes.

I could post 10 Tom Petty songs. But I won't. Maybe that's its own thread.

This fits some but not all of the requirements. And you've ruled out the Ramones.

one of my absolute favorite drum tracks of all time. Inspired by Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange.

Glen Campbell. Seasonal. And probably my best shot at a recognizable surprise.

This has been scientifically proven to be the perfect pop song.

This was supposedly written by Carol King when she lived on Pls. Valley Way and couldn't stand the place.

Yup. Don Kirschner thought if he could persuade his writers to take on a mortgage they'd work harder to produce more hits.
