Propane refill for small tanks?

Mar 4, 2026 at 8:34am
We just bought a smaller Ignik refillable propane tank (3.8 lbs) to take camping and avoid using the disposable green 1lb tanks.  But Woolley Fuel, who we use to fill our 20 lb tank, says it's too small for them to fill.  Anyone else refill these small tanks locally?

@RichardR,

There are a lot of refill kits on Amazon.  How does the attachment compare to a 1 pound tank?  These kits spe3cify 1 pound bottles because those are the most popular.  I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to refill your new tank from your grill tank IF the connection is same AND you have enough gas in te grill tank.

My tank has the exact same fitting as the 20 lb tank, so it should connect to the refill station at Woolley or other places. This is why I bought it. Unfortunately, they don't like refilling smaller tanks for some reason. So I am looking for a place that will do the refill.

I did look at the refillable 1 lb tank kits, but thought this would be easier. Learning that maybe that's not the case.

I don’t have any first hand experience with them. I believe they’re very close to Center Court.

Thanks for the recommendation. I will contact them

@RichardR,

Try “DIY refill propane bottles”  as a YouTube search.

Also, some U Haul locations may have small tank refill capacit.  They,re just not convenient.

I think I used to go to this place for CO2 for my mosquito trap:

I do agree with mrincredible that refilling the tank myself might not be the best solution.  (I have already read about those who refill their green 1 lb containers and end up having leaks.)  U-Haul is a good idea, as are the other industrial gas places.  Just thought it would be simpler than it is -- Ignik certainly makes it out to be just as convenient as filling a 20 lb tank.  But then again, they just want to make the sale.

FYI I was able to successfully get my small tank filled at U-Haul on Rte 22 in Scotch Plains.
