Portable Generators - electric start vs recoil/pull start? archived

Nov 2, 2013 at 3:23pm
Have read through lots of threads on pros and cons of different kinds of generators and electrical set-ups. Have decided to go with a portable generator (most likely a Generac), but am now faced with the choice of starters and I didn't see this discussed anywhere. Thoughts? Pros and cons of each? I already know that the pull starter model is cheaper.
My vote is the electric start. My husband had to be home when we ran the generator because I could not work the pull start. Not strong enough/bad shoulder. :O

Mine has both a battery operated start, which needs to be regularly charged in an outlet, and a pull start. It's much easier using the battery charged switch.

Electric Start much easier...but more expensive and need to keep battery charged... those are the pros and cons.... I vote spend the extra money for the electric start

If you get the electric start make sure to get a trickle charger... very inexpensive and great for maintaining the battery. You may also want to get in the habit of starting the unit every quarter, just... to check! I start mine every few months with the pull charger - it's what I'd call my worst case scenario.

Haven't signed in for a month, but wanted to thank everyone who posted replies. Electric starter it is, and will schedule the quarterly tests. Great advice. Much appreciated.

Mine is electric start.

mine is both-but i could use a trickle charger.

they're cheap as hell and easy to install. If you start the unit every quarter you can probably get away with the pull-starter... but it's nice to have both options!
