Ohio Adventures

Willingboro NJ used to have drainage ditches. I remember hunting golf balls out of them as a kid. I’ve only seen them in rural areas recently developed up north.

Some of the nicer newer (say 1960+) neighborhoods here in Wis have ditches, usually with no sidewalks.  I think they want to feel rural.

How was your diner?

it was pretty good. didn't match the best of NJ though. I got a taylor ham and a sloppy joe. The joe particularly didn't meet NJ standards. OTOH we've got Diamond Deli nearby - some of the best sandwiches I've ever had. And reasonably priced too. Maybe I should tell them about the sloppy joe. I'd bet they'd make a great one.

on another note, weed sales start today. about 90 shops throughout the state. I have to give OH some credit here. Compared to NJ they got it done about twice as fast. Even with our obstructionist Republicans. I'll probably check one out today, but I hear that OH prices will be quite high, especially compared to neighboring Michigan, where I'll be traveling to in a couple of weeks. MI prices are crazy cheap, especially if it's on sale.

an another other note - my area has a lot of roadside ponds. I dunno why but they're all over. Usually picturesque, but in the summer they're pretty gross. Unless they've got a fountain in the middle to circulate the water, which is rare, they're covered in green algae. And I mean covered. 100%. blech

So, how do Ohioans feel about good ol' homeboy JD Vance making the bigtime?

ponds - left over (in spirit if not in fact) from farm days?  only place i've seen a lot of them is in the relative wilds of central New York, where they were actively or within memory used for watering stock or just for having water on hand

side bet - a lot of those obstructionist Rs may light up from time to time.  speaking discreetly from family, the ones most known for weed are west/now midwest "conservatives"

most any Ohioan that I hear mention him hates him. maybe I need to get out more.

checked out a dispensary today, just to see what's what. I looked at the price of vape carts. yikes!

someone else can do the math. note that the OH cart on bottom is 1g. The MI is .5

my whole life, I'd been watching tornadoes hit all those other places that were not NJ or NY. I would think - how could you live in a place that regularly gets tornadoes? Silly people.

we had 4 tornadoes here yesterday.

Ohio leads the country so far this year in tornadoes.

Ohio.

One hit within 8 miles of me.

I did not sign up for this.

Google tells me that the Appalachian Mountains, Great Lakes, and Atlantic Ocean temper the atmospheric conditions that lead to tornados.

well, the Great Lakes don't seem to be cutting it lately. I guess it works for MI and WI. OH, not so much.

Also flood control, especially in very flat country. I grew up in a very flat area, and all the subdivisions would always have little lakes, both for aesthetics but also for storm water management.

Yikes.

Apparently there was a murder/suicide at the local Taco Bell, not too far from me. It's in an area that I drive through almost every day. I've only seen FB posts about it so far but it seems legit. I'll post a news story when there is one.

Reservoir, lake and small ponds in Central Park --- none were/are natural. All the water in C.P. is controlled/regulated by one large faucet at the north end of the park. This is fed from Croton Reservoir. That is why, like the stream in The Ramble, it never goes dry and it never floods.

Remember, the park was designed by Olmsted. Natural depressions may have been incorporated in the design to facilitate use and control of water.

I was checking out a map of my local area, and noticed this section. It's the border area between Akron and Cuyahoga Falls. Akron is light green.

What the hell happened there, I wonder? Googling cuyahoga falls crazy border with akron yields nothing.
I especially like the second image.

you see a lot of towns/cities like this in Ohio and other similar states. As neighborhoods are developed on the borders, they are incorporated into the town/city as they add city water, sewer, other utilities, etc.

And here's a story about last night's shooting.

I was reading the comments and they’re saying road rage? I can’t believe someone would kill somebody who cut in front of them, then shoots themself, at the Taco Bell drive thru…. I’m thinking it’s more like domestic violence.

yeah, the commenters obviously don't know anything. FB'ers were saying it was road rage an hour after it happened.

OTOH, it could be. Too many guns in the hands of nutcases could lead to anything. Certainly, we've seen road rage incidents that led to gunfire before. We'll have to see what the investigation turns up.

Oh well. Road rage for the win. Though obviously, since the shooter immediately killed himself, there was something a lot deeper going on.

also, the shooter looks disturbingly like my nephew. creepy.

OMG, that poor lovely young woman.

Murder-suicide doesn't seem like the right phrase. It's always used when the parties know each other. But I guess we don't have a better phrase for this.

The shooter looks disturbingly like half the men in Oklahoma.

While I'm not a big fan of Halloween decorations, I have to give a bit of applause here. Zoom in for a full appreciation.

Check with Vern on the pot price question.  I'm sure he'll have the low-down.  If you need his number, text me.

low down?

ohio prices are ridiculous

I'll buy in MI instead, until they become more sane.

easy peasy.

another Halloween house, with a decidedly different tack than the last one. I think this is one is kind of cute.

On another note, I almost ran into one of those damn drainage ditches I mentioned a while back.
