that's what the Wild Card is for
So, we could have the second best team in the NL in a single elimination wild card playoff. In fact, the #2 and 3# teams in the NL Central could end up battling for the wild card spot.
Remember what is was for years - 4 divisions, no wild cards. It is better now.

Ha. Until 1968 it was two leagues, no divisions.
The Pirates are now playing .591 ball. Under the circumstances, they should be awarded honorary 1st place of the NL East and the Mets can have an automatic wild card spot.
I think the interesting thing about the NL East is the possibility that the division winner could be playing under .500 ball.

The Pirates are playing .578 baseball and they are 6 games out of first. In any other division, they would be in first place or tied for first with the exception of the AL Central where they would be a game behind KC.
