NJ Transit Rail Strike Seem as Likely

NJ Transit insiders say there is a 75 to 85 percent likelihood that a coalition of 17 rail unions, which have been working without a contract for five years, will call a "soft strike" over the weekend of March 12.
The strike could likely last through the Monday morning commute on March 14, when workers say they expect to be ordered back to work by the Obama administration. The last strike in March 1983 lasted for 34 days.

"They'll soften the blow ... Let the media know, let commuters know, let everyone get home on Friday night," one NJ Transit insider said.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I commute on weekends, so it looks like it'd be PATH for me. Anybody have a recommendation for the easiest station to drive to/park at?

Maybe Newark or Harrison.

Acts of terrorism like this should be against the law.

Your statement seems like an act of terrorism to me.  I think it should be against the law.

What law would require these people to go to a job? As the OP noted, their contract has expired.

Well, for that matter, what law would require NJ Transit to employ them if they weren't working and didn't have a contract?

Not THIS worker! I don't take orders from Obama or nobody!

Wait...

Are they're talking about the train workers? Or the workers on the Monday morning commute? Because it kinda reads like the Obama administration will be ordering us to go work on March 14...

If buses are also impacted, it is nice to know that the 31 bus (Valley Street and SO Avenue routes) will take you from Maplewood/South Orange to the PATH Station in Newark.  A lot of us took advantage of this franchise bus line during the last NJT strike.

If NJT buses are running, 107 to Port Authority and various local bus lines to PATH at Newark Penn Station are good alternatives.

Which is why they negotiate.

Right!  Especially when  there is such a large pool of unemployed locomotive engineers living in the local area.....

Perhaps the Laws of Common Sense?

I dunno. The air traffic controllers were all fired. Seems like a rather specific skill set to me... But I was being facetious--we go to a job because we want to get paid.

The Air Force, Navy and Marines retire a quantity of trained air traffic controllers every year.  Not so much with train engineers.
