The streaming version of Netflix has very little that I want to watch. All of the new/interesting stuff (to me, anyway) is only available on Netflix by DVD.

A wider variation of Pink Floyd's "Thirteen channels of s...t of the tv to choose from,"

Netflix streaming is filled with unappealing stuff. D.V.D. used to be good but the selection has diminished. Things went downhill when they lost Starzz or whatever agreement they lost a couple of years ago.
Amazon Prime has a ton of HBO & Showtime content and a pretty decent movie selection. I started using their app, which lets me download movies/tv shows on my home wi-fi so that I can watch on the train without obliterating my data plan.
RE Netflix: You can get a combo subscription: DVD + streaming. Useful for movies that are available only in one form or the other.
Another source: BCCLS/library -- and free!
