Love the Train Station Mural Replacements

The paintings in the Maplewood tunnel are a delight, and mounting them away from the inevitable water damage is a great idea.

Thank you, artists and Arts Council.

I was very attached to the old murals, but I love these too!

An insultingly slapdash sampling by a lousy photographer.

Excellent.  Thanks Dave!

Both tunnels or just the northern most tunnel?  I have a friend coming to town later today and would love to show her these murals.

2nd mural --- ant on the lower right, OD?

Excellent murals.

Excellent murals.

Were they done by Columbia art students?

I know the guy who did the second from bottom. Professional illustrator and all around great guy. Teaches, but not at Columbia.

I haven’t been in the southern tunnel in a while, so I can’t confirm — but it was a replacement project that apparently had to scramble to raise enough money, so I’m assuming only the northern tunnel.

If I recall the Arts Council’s announcements correctly, there was an open call for submissions.

The Walkman and the fez are nice touches. They definitely place the work outside the Columbia School of artists.

Note the erect antennae, upheld cup and active exhalation of smoke. Definitely alive — which makes me wonder how that pie has remained untouched.

I see that they didn't erect a canopy.

I was expecting murals.  The effect is more of a small art gallery with the paintings mounted on boards that are then hung on the walls.  Are there any plans to add art works to the south tunnel?

Plans, apparently, but no details in this February release from the Arts Council (via Village Green):

The project to beautify the Ricalton Square/Dunnell Road tunnel is Phase 1 of the MAC’s “Art in Motion” initiative, launched in cooperation with NJ Transit. Phase 2, to transform the other pedestrian tunnel in Maplewood Village, is to follow.

They are beautiful. But none of them looks like The Replacements.

Of course not. They’re on the bus.

Nice article in Village Green that lists the MAPLEWOOD TRAIN TUNNEL PROJECT: ARTISTS AND WORKS

  • Shauna Cagan and Jennifer McClory, Maplewood Moments
  • Lawrence Ciarallo, Sovereign, Zig-Zag
  • Ekaterina Ermilkina, New Transformations
  • Moss Freedman, Ants at a Picnic
  • Adam Gustavson, The Tunnelers
  • Lisa Lackey, Maplewood’s Grace
  • Aimee Mower Lally, Untitled
  • Jay Pingree, Nine Commuters

It's one of those Maplewood Moments when you realize one of the artists is a good friend, and you know another artist through your kids' activities...
