can you use a phone app? I guess it depends on whether the phone will accept your input signal.
wow, I remember Mr Matt, he was a good guy, I learned a lot in his class. What I learned there helped me through my stint in the Army as well as providing a basis for my life time profession. Too bad they did away with classes like that.
Sadly, I had several oscilloscopes here, but recycled them a few years ago.
Good luck in your search, an O-scope might be hard to find these days.
I think I am going to go with a Hantek HT6022BE (PC Based USB Digital Storage Oscilloscope, 20 MHz Bandwidth) for about $66. See https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Useful-Hantek-6022BE-PC-Based-USB-Digital-Storag-Oscilloscope-2-Channels-MA/254040432455?hash=item3b25fd5f47:g:iK8AAOSw9~RcI3A9
Same item is sold on Amazon but takes longer for delivery so I think I will go with the US based seller. Based on Amazon reviews, I understand that the drivers have to be manually installed (as the drivers do NOT come as executable files).

I am looking for a used oscilloscope. I have not used one since Mr. Matt's electronics class at CHS. What I want to know is how to test the oscilloscope to make sure it works and is appropriate for my intended projects. I intend to use the oscilloscope for automotive hall effect wave form analysis, reluctance wave form analysis and ignition wave form.
Any assistance in what to look-for/test would be greatly appreciated.
