London parents will get fined for dropping their kids at school by car

The decision to fine any vehicles seen dropping off or picking up kids within a particular zone of east London stems from city councillors’ prolonged efforts to make the area safer and less congested. They say they’ve been trying for years “to encourage sensible driving and parking,” to no avail. Neighborhood residents complain frequently about their driveways being blocked by illegally parked cars for 15 minutes or more, often while they’re trying to get to work, and the streets are chronically overcrowded.

Perhaps, we could enact a similar ordinance in South Orange for South Mountain school (targeted at the entitled parents illegally parking and blocking traffic in the vicinity of the school).

Same for any school (elementary, middle, or high school) in our district.

Yeah, dropping your kid off at school or picking them up with your car makes a lot of sense until there are too many people doing it, causing each other problems. I envision a no-kid-in-cars zone two to five blocks around a school so they have to walk at least the last bit of the trip. It would also help any parking problems near the school.

I don't know if it is district wide, but Clinton School does not allow kindergartners, first graders, or second graders to walk unaccompanied to school. A parent MUST accompany them. If that parent is doing the drop off on their way to work, a car might be their only option to do drop off and still make it to work on time.

I used to park my car and then walk my child to the front door. That is different from double parking or otherwise blocking traffic or blocking a driveway.

I agree that double parking and blocking driveways is wrong, but that is a traffic issue. Have an officer on scene randomly just two or three times a month to ticket every violation they see and you'll see the behavior stop pretty quickly. Banning parents from driving their children to school is not the answer.
