Lasik in Canada???

Does anybody know anything about getting Lasik or PRK surgery in Canada?  I know it can be significantly cheaper (like $1000 instead of $5000).  If anybody has any advice on Doctors, locations, etc. please let me know.  Thank you!!

All I know is that Canada had the procedure approved and functioning, several years before it was up and running in the U.S.

Thanks Formerlyjerseyjack.  Does anybody else have any info/advice?

My nephew went a few years ago to this place; > http://www.yongeeglintonlaser.com/?gclid=CIqJ9qeVobkCFctAMgodvnsA_Q

Suppose to be one of the best and pioneer in Lasik;  do not know which doctor he had. It was real cheap. My sister who lives in Canada did the research for him.  It was well under a 1k back than.

The name was Dr. Rootman , http://www.yongeeglintonlaser.com/about#Rootman

I had a friend who had it done in Canada.  he did get an infection and had to go back to Canada to have it treated.  Still saved a lot of money but just be aware it is not uncommon to get an infection.

I thought the prices in the states had dropped a lot?

i paid 3k total in 2001 in New York.  I thought the price had dropped since then.

google it in Montreal. That would be the closest center. Call and ask prices.

Thank you all for the feedback.  Just to follow up in case anybody else is interested, here is what I've found out in my research:

I called 2 places in Canada and both were not as inexpensive as I thought they would be.  One (Dr. Rootman) was going to cost over $5000, the other (Lasik MD) would have been close to $4000 for custom wavefront lasik and somewhere from 1000-2600 for standard.  I was surprised to find out that they both had affiliates in the US (one in PA, the other in Syracuse) that were a bit less expensive - so no need to renew my passport.

I then decided to do more research locally since it appears from my limited inquiries that it doesn't make sense to go all the way to Canada anymore.  I've found a wide array of pricing, from 1800-6000+ in the greater NYC region.  I have my consultation in two weeks with Dr. Gordon of Palisades Laser Eye Center in Pomona, NY, and if I'm a candidate then it's going to cost either 2000, 2500, or 3000 depending on which procedure is most appropriate for my eyes.  Wish me luck!

good luck , thanks for the follow up.

Good luck  out of curiosity, were they quoting prices in U.S. Or Canadian dollars?

GOOD LUCK

Thanks for this follow up...keep us posted on the rest of your story.

I just saw a GROUPON for this place for $1,999.

Good Luck! It has been a few years, but nephew's cost with Dr. Rootman was under 1k.  I guess we capitalized medicine in Canada.   Was the 5k in Us or Canadian dollars? Big difference with the exchange rate right now.

Am I at the only one with an unreasonable fear of getting a 'Groupon' or other discount for medical services ... or for someone to shoot lasers at my eyes?

agreed although the whole Lasik industry seems to thrive on these methods of getting customers.  IF I ever get Lasik I will go based on references and to someone local in case of infections.

fwiw: i researched the place.  It does seem to check out.  I even have a coworker that used them and said they were great.

and fwiw...i am going to use them.  I'll let you know if they blind me.  grin

I had the lasik surgery on Thursday and everything went great! Palisades Laser Eye Center was a fantastic experience. Dr. Gordon was very straight-forward and has a ton of experience with the procedure. His staff was also great. They answered all my questions and concerns during my consultation exam. Especially his main assistant, Dr. Salameh, she was very informative, explained the details of the procedure very clearly, and made me feel at ease. I felt really comfortable and confident in choosing them to shoot lasers into my eyes! And now I have 20/20 vision. Freaking amazing!!

I actually went for my consultation yesterday. I would agree that both doctors were really informative and really personable, patient, etc.

If you don't mind me asking, did you get the IntraLasik? or did you go w/ the old fashioned blade method?

Congrats on the newfound vision!

So, you're voting for Hillary as Trump is a true danger to the world? (Also, congratulations.)

Congratulations, terp! (Steve's comment was funny! grin) )

Thanks for the Congrats! That was a truly amazing process. I'd say it was easier than getting a filling.
