iPad battery charging

Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time on the net, including quite a few videos.  This means my battery needs to be recharged often.  Does operating a tablet while plugged in/charging affect battery life?

Also, the charging brick has always gotten quite hot.  Apple store clerk says it’s normal, but didn’t check how bad it is.  Thoughts- other than talk to someone else.

I wouldn't expect there to be. There can be a lot of unproven theories about batteries out there, but for the most part modern batteries should be fine with pretty much any vaguely normal usage.

When I was first introduced to Apple products I was told always let the device charge completely before unplugging. Something about the battery only having so many full ‘charges/lives’ before it started to have issues. Once you plug it in, it’s counts as a ‘life’ so may as well charged it fully. I have friends who will not use their device while it’s charging. I however replace my iPhone every 2 years so idk what it feels like to have poor battery charge.

As the device gets older and the iOS releases keep coming, it’s expected your devise will slow down, it’s just how it’s designed.

My iPad gets hot when charging as does my MacBookPro. I try to lay it on a surface that allows it to breathe/cool down.

Seems like a lot to do for a device but I’m team Apple all the way.

Good luck with your device.

Using while charging is fine. Unplugging before fully charging is fine. The battery heating up reduces its life, so minimize that. The charging brick heating up may be normal. Discharging below a certain level too often shortens the life, though what that certain level is depends, probably 10 or 20%.

While batteries generally do have a number of charges, partial charges still only count as a partial charge.

There are some technicalities that exist where this isn't 100% the case, but they're more technicalities than anything to worry about and people end up making them into bigger issues than they are so you end up with battery myths.

It's sort of like how people think water will drain one way on one side of the equator and one on the other due to the Coriolis effect. It theoretically could have an effect, but the real world more than cancels the effect out unless you're a hurricane.

Interesting.  I recall Apple’s instrux for iPad2 specifically said to fully discharge then fully recharge at least once a month.  Based on this I do it quite often.

Well I don't know. Maybe they wrote that before we knew what we now know about lithium batteries. It's bad to discharge them fully, especially too many times.

I checked a bunch of articles about Apple batteries.  (Apple doesn’t have alot to say this topic).  One article made a point that a complete discharge=>100% recharge cycle should be done at least once a month when iPad is not used for long periods.  Note: what’s a long period?  This areticle also implied to use and recharge often.

Charging UP completely is probably not a bad idea. My understanding is that with modern batteries, discharging fully could be bad. I do it occasionally by accident but never on purpose.

I'm not an expert, so this is just one man's opinion, but I think most people have absolutely no reason to concern themselves with this topic nowadays. It was a real issue back in the day, because nickel-cadmium batteries would, indeed, build up a memory. And I know studies show that there is some marginal memory effect in lithium-ion batteries. But in the real-world under anything resembling normal use, I think most people will never see any problems arising from battery charging procedure.

there is a low battery warning at 10% then another at 5%; tablet shuts down at 2%.  I will just make sure to recharge between warnings.
