Insurance question PIP after auto accident

We were involved in a collision.  My three sons and I were transported to the hospital for evaluation, and thankfully other than bruises, we’re okay

The person handling my claim from our auto policy is insisting she needs my children’s social security numbers.  The form she sent over specifically says to fill out the SS number if anyone IS on Medicare A or B, and that if they’re NOT on Medicare then to skip to the next section.  None of us are on Medicare, have never been, so according to the form we should be skipping to the next section, yet she still wants my children’s social security numbers.  Yes, this is the insurance company emailing me from a NJM email address and not some stranger cold calling me, but I don’t even provide this information to doctors when they request it.

Do they really need it?  I’m mostly puzzled because their own form says no, but I don’t want the claim being denied

This is all because Auto insurance companies in NJ are the primary responsible for auto accident injuries by law, but health insurance companies pay the initial bills and then have to go after the auto insurance companies to be reimbursed.  Yes they do need it, and you should provide it.  Unless there is something abnormal, it should not cost you anything out of pocket, although I do question why they don't have this information already.

Just want to say we’re glad you’re all ok.

My first thought is that they want to make sure you are you and not someone who is trying to steal your identity.  They are looking to combat insurance fraud.

Do not send social security numbers over the internet!!!

Call he Insurance Company. Speak to the adjuster handling the claim. If he/she confirms that they need the ss numbers supply them over the phone.

Hope you all are OK.

The bills are being sent to my auto insurance, NJM.  They are the ones asking for my children’s social security number.  But the form they sent me specifically states that if I do not have Medicare then I am to skip to the next section.  The form is only for federal law about Medicare and auto insurance covering bills they’re supposed to.  I don’t have Medicare, my children don’t have Medicare. The form says that I only need to supply SS numbers if Medicare is involved, yet the representative from my auto insurance  is still asking for my children’s SS numbers

Thank you Joanne.  It was scary, but we all walked away.  If it wasn’t for my children I wouldn’t have even gone to the hospital for an evaluation, but because my three kids were in the car and the EMT’s at the scene recommended we go, I decided to go.

Seat belts and crumple zones saved our lives, or in the very least saved us from serious injuries.  The other driver was issued a ticket at the scene, so I’m hoping my insurance company is able to collect from her company and I can get reimbursed for my deductible.

It is possible that this representative is just inexperienced or just wrong. Ask her why she is asking for that information. Sometimes they are weary of fraud. Sometimes they take it to an extreme.

They want to make sure that they are paying bills for the correct person so it might be a case of verifying identity, but for that name and date of birth should  be enough.

I would guess you are shaken up from the accident. You may want to wait a couple of days before speaking to the insurance rep. Also, it's an odd work week so Monday or Tuesday might be based. Additionally, are the bills from your own physician? His or her office staff deal with insurance companies all the time and should be able to assist you.

The accident was actually on the 11th. I’m still waiting for my check from the insurance company.  They needed to receive the title first.  They signed for the title on the morning of the 23rd.  They called me to say they approved the payment late afternoon on the 27th.  Still haven’t received the check.

The only medical bills are for the ER.  I filled out the billing forms showing it was for an auto accident, and included the claim number and contact information for the insurance company when I turned the forms in the next day.  When I turned in the forms and spoke with billing they confirmed that they had it listed as auto insurance to be billed first, and then once that is finalized the medical deductible is billed to my healthcare plan.

Well, if ER didn't need your children's social security numbers then NJM shouldn't need them either.

Yikes! Respect for your vehicle. Glad you all walked away.
