In Search Of: Financial Advisor for US/France Expat

I know it is a long shot but ....we are looking for a financial advisor, even one affiliated with a bank, that knows the ins and outs of international account ownership in both France and US.

(Estate planning knowledge would be a huge plus!)

There are, broadly speaking, two questions here.  The first, and this is what most people probably think about when you ask for a financial advisor recommendation, is how should the money be managed to maximize return on investment.  I won't address this first question.

The second, and more important consideration, is to be in compliance with tax laws in both tax jurisdictions.  In brief, if this is a case of a U.S. citizen with accounts in France where these accounts have not yet been declared to the U.S. Dept. of Treasury (through the IRS), then this is the most urgent matter to resolve.  I have no idea what French law is in this regard.

Dilip Patel CPAs in Union have a lot of experience with U.S. citizens/residents with foreign accounts and would be worth talking to.

If there are foreign accounts not declared to the U.S. Govt. and/or there are taxes due but not paid on these accounts, then you will probably need to find a lawyer to help you navigate the process of straightening things out with the IRS.

@tjohn, Thank you for the tip.

Client has dual citizenship and investments in both countries.  Things are getting complicated!

@kmk, I sent you a PM

Sounds like you need an international tax lawyer.

Kmk, I just sent an updated personal message.  Best, Gary
